The Trump Presidency

This is what's wrong with American politics. It's treated as a game. Politicians care more about scoring points than they do about taking care of the country. The press is horribly complicit in this. CNN covers politics like ESPN does sports.

We have people standing at the end of this shutdown looking at billions of dollars lost, public employees who haven't been paid in over a month, leaders who have thrown childish tantrums like children, and disfunction in Washington at an all-time high declaring winners and losers

If this is your definition of a win, maybe you should want to win less often.

The result of constant polling. Data is good, but data without judgment is just a pile of numbers. I agree with your contention that one of the big problems now is that the media is split into two camps and everything is about who is winning and who is losing, when it should be about charting a course for the country's future.

I've always admired Pelosi's ability to run her caucus even though I don't necessarily agree with all of her positions (although it's obvious she's not the crackpot liberal the right paints her to be). In my early days in politics, my mentor told me "There's only two things you need to know: Who your friends are and how to count." That's what Pelosi's about.

This is not new.

Who lost billions of dollars? The economy? If so, that was really dumb.

You are talking about Trump's crazy gambit to force a very small minority idea on the majority. Tell me who looks childish.

It's not my definition of a win, but just a political win for Pelosi.

The government shutdown was enormously expensive.

The treating of politics as a sport is nothing new. It's just really bad right now. We had Pelosi, McConnell, Schumer, and Trump playing a game and all of them put the game ahead of the good of the country. Shame on all of them.

and the game was the wall.
and the precedent of the executive branch holding the country hostage over not getting - legislatively- what it wanted

Closest historical comparison that comes to mind would be Andrew Jackson defying the Supreme Court saying "then let them enforce it"
Another would be Nixon bombing Cambodia in defiance of Congress
That was an article of impeachment

So no, this isn't both sides are to blame
This was the legislative branch holding the executive in check.
As designed

In the end --- the legislative voted and the executive signed the bill to finance the government

Exactly, the Dems won the House to check Trump. They COULD NOT give in. They had to show him he was not a dictator of a banana republic. No matter how much he wishes he were.

with the important detail that Ryan and McConnell had no interest in a shutdown and were blindsided by Trump who apparently spends too much time taking in right wing talk radio

Donald Trump just lost a dick measuring contest to a woman.

I didnt ask for your thoughts, I asked you to play devils advocate
to explain why the votes weren't there.

If you cant you don't understand the situation.
As I thought

There is no other side with politicians. Its all about hopping on the gravy train. Need term limits on congress.

Congress members have been bought and paid for since the Revolutionary War.
But that has nothing to do with having or not having the votes for the wall

And thus why Trump deserves every ounce of blame for the shutdown. This was his shutdown. And McConnell helped enable it for a month.
all McConnell did was enable Trump to walk into his own trap...I think he also clarified for his own caucus the price to be paid for following the dear leader...they didnt like it but they learned something
