I think people are too high on the Phillies right now. They were in the race so long last year it's easy to forget they ended up 80-82 and we're lucky to end there. Their Pythagorean record was 76-86.

By comparison, the Braves were 90-72 and has a Pythagorean of 92-70.

The Phils started the offseason at a big deficit. They had to add big to compete.

And while I don't normally put a ton of stock in team chemistry as these guys are professionals, the Phils might have an issue with it. The Phillies had a bad clubhouse last year, Harper is not known as a great teammate, Segura is known to be a cancer, and Kapler probably isn't enough of a manager of human beings to keep things even.

It's too early to hand the title to them.

i’m with you here. they added a lot but they also needed a lot. they still need pitching in my mind. they’re currently once again relying on starters staying remarkably healthy.

if harper transforms into a stead 6-8 WAR player, which i think is clearly still possible, they’re much more dangerous. kingery could also be a big boost if he plays well.

but i’m shocked they haven’t addressed the starting pitching at all yet. they will have starters go down and right now there’s no backup plan.

I agree that the difference between the Braves and Phillies isn’t that great right now, and they’re both better than the Mets. The difference is maybe 2 wins either way at most. All of these injuries could change things though.

I think people are underselling the Mets.

The starting pitching won't be injured every year. Just by dumb luck they will have a healthy year. Wheeler was one of the best starters in baseball last year in the second half. The offense is significantly improved, especially if you think McNeil is a legitimate player. Conforto will have to stay healthy but he is a legit middle of the order bat.

Like the Phillies they have some moving parts to figure out but dont' underestimate a team that has that amount of top level pitching.

Their offense and defense will be horrible.

Disagree completely on the offense. He didn't show it last yaer but I still think Rosario can be a 5 WAR type short stop. Cano is always going to be a good hitter. Lowrie was a very nice addition. Conforto is a stud hitter. Nimmo is a very good OBP guy. Whats not to like about the offense?

Defense will have some issues - especially if Alonso gets the call. But thats going to be a huge injection on offense.

I'm starting Solarte and Bud Norris would be good midseason pickups...that would get us to 100 wins

My preference is Kimbrel of course but as that doesn't seem to be the direction the front office wants to go then I'm not sure why Norris isn't already here.

What role does Solarte play? Who does he replace?

The team is also old as hell. They will probably suffer injuries the worst of the lot and don't expect prime Cano unless he's back on his HGH diet. Lowrie was great last year, we'll see if it was a fluke at age 34. Frazier is on the decline. Their younger players are nice, but nothing special other than maybe Conforto.
