Around The Majors 2019

Phillies have gone the Cubs' route in putting their team together. They still have some decent prospect bodies they could move for an upgrade (along with Nick Williams from the major league roster), but if and when they do that, there won't be much left in the cupboard.

In another matter, I was a bit surprised to see ex-Brave minor leaguer Dylan Moore on the Mariners' opening day roster. Didn't do much of anything in his time in the Braves' system after coming over from the Rangers and was let go at the end of spring training in 2018. He went on to have a dynamite year in AA and AAA in 2018 in the Mariners' system and found his way to the big leagues in 2019 as their IF utilityman. Baseball is a curious game.

I actually watched Dylan some in 2017. He was a good hitter who hit a lot of line drives. He reminded me of Dpete in some regards. I was really shocked we cut him. It is like that giant pitcher we dropped this year who had great numbers. —chase mullins. Just remembered his name.

can't imagine nick williams has any value at all.
the phillies will likely see at least 1 or 2 pitchers get seriously hurt considering no one did last year. their lack of depth there will probably end up hurting.

Williams is still only 25 and has a decent pedigree. He is major league-ready and while he wouldn't be a centerpiece to a deal, a trade partner that demands someone of that stature to be included in a deal along with prospects might be interested. His defense appears to kill him, so he may be a cheaper version of Matt Kemp at this juncture.

As per Moore, I have always wondered about the Braves' minor league hitting instruction. There are obviously guys that the instructional team cannot wreck (Acuna, Albies, and other top-drawer guys), but it puzzles me when a guy like Moore has a miserable season in Mississippi and then catches fire after he switches organizations. The Texas League and the Pacific Coast League are big-time hitters' leagues and that likely contributed to Moore's turnaround to some extent, but his chances of making the big leagues ever after 2017 seemed remote (and maybe that is being kind). He was a cheap college senior signing by the Rangers out of college and was always old for the classification in which he played, but I can't help but think the Braves misread his ceiling. He's never going to be a star, so the end of the Braves' baseball world is not at hand, but we seem to miss enough on guys like this that makes me wonder who is doing the evaluations.

oh man. i guess i just see nothing in the guy. kemp is a better hitter and, apparently, even a better fielder. i think there are a lot of nick williams out there. also has awful splits. he's barely a 4th OF for me, if he's even that.

Nick would be a hard deadline trade guy. His clock is already ticking and most clubs trading don’t want mlb guys.

The Phillies are already up 2-0 on the Nats. It's early, but me thinks they're going to be really damn good. I get our contention window, but ti would have been nice to use resources to grab elite players over the offseason.

He sucks.

I’m willing to bet the difference between the Braves and Phillies at the end of the season isn’t more than 2 wins.

And I still think the Nats are the best team in the division.
