The Phillies aren't likely to re-acquire Giles, meaning they have to chase the other guys - the Smith/Vasquez/Hand types. If we make a fairly significant pen upgrade now, they're going to have to make the decision whether they can keep up that much earlier - if they're still in win-now mode at least. They either choose to hang onto their top guys and fight in 2020 while they still have Realmuto and McCutchen is back - and deal with the fans' ire for doing so - or they make aother stupid trade. Either way, you've made it tougher for them.

Same thing with the Gnats. Some of the guys we're talking about that should be enough to get Smith are afterthoughts in our system. They'd be Top 5-10 guys in Washington's. Significant pen improvements for us this early forces their hand. If they want to go get the Smith/Hand/Vasquez types to keep up in the hopes that Rendon decides to stay, it's going to cost them Kieboom/Garcia/Denaburg types.

Make both teams make that call now, not 3 weeks from now. You've still got plenty of pieces to keep going (although they shouldn't need to be used), be kept for plenty of depth, or to potentially be used later.

so us trading for a reliever might make the fillies smarter...I dont want that to happen

There are circumstances in which an overpay for players is acceptable, IMO, but you haven't laid out any such situation, IMO.

you've urged AA to make a move sooner rather than later...jump the gun..get ahead of the Nats and Phillies..you understand that for this to be done, it would require a clear overpay, yes? have you still somehow, some way, missed that point?
by simply advocating for going out and getting one of the elite RPs RIGHT NOW, you are advocating an overpay...because that's the only way you're getting one right now. this is not complicated.

That depends on the teams motivation. If they are dumping salary (Kennedy) then moving him sooner is more beneficial. Look at the Bruce trade. The M’s didn’t care about return. Just get his money off the books ASAP.

You're right. It's not. Now go back and find a single instance where I advocated for an overpay. One. I said make an offer, and if that's not enough right now move on to the next guy/team on your list until you get a "yes" with the prospects you're willing to offer at this point. Depending on who you get and how they fit, you may not need to go back and get involved when the bidding starts to really heat up. You simply don't know whether someone's liable to say "Camargo and Davidson? Send me the paperwork!" until you go down the list.

Oh, and by the way - I haven't "urged AA" to do anything. I somehow don't get the feeling he's ghosting here looking for my ideas - or anyone else's for that matter, so get over yourself a little and lighten up.

So will the Phillies make win now moves regardless or will they only make a big move if the Braves make a move? That was the question, how the Braves might affect their decision making.
