2019 Trade Deadline Thread:

Didn't say he can't - simply saying that we've got a chance to improve the rotation from within with pieces we already have in Folty and Gausman. We DON'T have those pieces in the pen.

Our rotation is currently.

Soroka (will probably need to be skipped a few times to maintain his innings)
DK (solid #3 type)
Fried (on the DL, probably will need to get skipped or moved to the pen)
Julio is Julio
Gausman/Folty who knows what you can get from them

If you can get Stroman, and go in a playoff series with Soroka/DK/Stroman, thats a very solid front 3.

We without a doubt need another starter more than we need another BP arm, dont think it's particulary close either. Sure the bullpen isnt perfect yes, and we probably need another arm, more likely a solid closer so Luke can move in the 7th-8th inning role. But Webb when healthy, Newk, Minter, Luke, Swarzak, and some others down there, it's not near as bad as it was to start the year. Wiegel/Parsons just got called up as well.

With the Braves drafting Shea, just spitballing, and for discussion, i wonder if AA would put Contreras in a trade over the likes of a Waters.

How much value does Contreras have anymore? He’s taken a huge step back. Struggled in A+ and has been atrocious in AA

While some of the dumber members of the fan base don’t care about “value charts”, luckily AA does. His strict adherence to seeking value has built a deep roster that has allowed the Braves to win despite getting nothing from Gaus and Folty. Any fan posting negatively about value is at the same level of intellect as the Phillies and Mets FO...so congrats.

Having said that, if Smith is available the Braves need to put together the winning package of 40s/45s to get him in Atlanta. He is the highest impact BP arm potentially available, and he can be leveraged in the playoffs such that he can be nearly as impactful as any SP.

Can I get a listing of which teams heavily use the future values to build their teams. Here I was thinking the Mets and Phillies were two of those teams. Or do we just automatically assume the best teams use FV and the worst teams dont? I thought the Cano deal was all about the future values.

The Cano deal was pretty even in terms of expected surplus value. But the surplus value going to the Mets was frontloaded due to Cano's age and contract. And backloaded for the Mariners due to Kelenic. That's an ex ante take.

Ex post it's been bad for the Mets due to disappointing seasons by Cano and Diaz.

We might have those pieces. I wouldn’t discount what we have already in house. Weigel. Clouse. Webb. All could be diamonds we have been looking for. We have already seen Webb.

I think they can eventually be good pieces too - however, neither is ready to be trusted to close games in a pennant race or playoff series in 2019.

Trading newcomb would fill one hole and create another

True. I dont think Newk would be available in a trade for Stroman. The primary piece in a trade for Stroman would be one of Wright, Wilson, Fried, or Muller.

I could see Newk being moved as part of a trade for a premium lefty reliever such as Felipe Vazquez.

Stroman for something centered around 1 of Newk, Fried, Touki, Wilson or Wright makes sense in terms of being realistic.

Wheeler making 2 starts before the deadline means he could still be the highest impact rental SP.

It’s going to be a fascinating 10 days.

Wheeler should cost the least, Stroman has another year of control left.

Not sure how deep into the farm AA will go to get a starter or not.

I wouldn’t trade Fried but anyone else you mentioned would be fine.
I’d hate to see Newk go since he’s proven to be a useful bullpen piece but Fried is the one I’d feel bad about.
He’s already a solid number 4 with plenty of team control and Stroman isn’t enough of an upgrade to justify trading them for each other straight up.
Now if it was a legit 1/2 for Fried then I’d do it in a heartbeat but that won’t happen.I’m lower on Stroman then most but I also realize the YUGE intangibles he brings that cant be fully measured.
