BIG if true: Thor + Diaz potentially for Anderson, Wright, and 2 prospects?

Pitchers are bought for now, not next year, and certainly not for multiple years later. At least not by competent FOs.

That's why everyone is dumbfounded by the Mets' acquisition of Stroman, though the price they paid makes it pretty hard to be critical of the deal from their end.

I get it on one end, a front 4 of DeGrom/Stro/Thor/Matz is pretty good. But if the Mets are out of it again next year, would it really surprise anyone if they traded Stroman if he didnt sign an extension before then.

I dont think so. It's still a little confusing though. I think as a GM, you need to either be contending or rebuilding, being in the middle is the hardest part to be as a GM. It's where the Braves were after 2014.

I don’t think they will be a playoff team next year either but they’ll be close so why trade assets for a 2 year rental when you aren’t a playoff caliber team yet?

What if they traded for Thor and then signed Cole in the offseason? Would not put that past Preller, though I don't know if they have the payroll space for it. That seems like a playoff team that could do damage.

As good as the Cubs did opening their window of contention, they closed it by making moves that were just as poor.

That WS flag is going to fly forever though, so it's hard to criticize them too harshly I guess.

The Padres system is so deep, and it wouldnt cost Tatis or Gore (or at least the Padres arent giving them up for Thor). So they could afford to give up some of their farm for him.

Agree on the Cubs, i thought the Chapman move was an absurd overpay. Imagine a middle infield of Rizzo/Gleyber/Baez/Bryant with Contreras behind the plate. And Eloy in the outfield as well. But you know sometimes the best moves you make are the ones that dont happen.

I dont know but the Padres have been linked to Thor for awhile. Only way i think Braves get him is if they took back a bad salary or AA overpaid like crazy, two of which i dont think happen.

That's basically just Cano (never), Cespedes (maybe), Familia (maybe).

Q/A on Baseball America with Kyle Glaser.

What would it cost for the Braves to get Syndergaard?

Kyle Glaser: Given the Mets' reported asks - and especially because they're in the same division - Cristian Pache and Ian Anderson would seem to be the starting point, which would very, very hefty given where Syndergaard is actually at as a pitcher right now. If the two teams were to strike a deal I don't think it would actually settle there, but Braves fans shouldn't delude themselves into thinking they could get Syndergaard cheap. It would be very costly.

Yeah hard pass here.

Waters, Anderson, Teheran or Gausman, Wilson for Diaz/Thor?

My personal hope is we just stand pat. We have two spots in the outfield about to open up. Need for a catcher soon and I really don't want Anderson and Riley to kick our tails for the next decade as Mets.

That's about $100M in prospect capital, and a gross overpay for Thor.

Another guy we can safely ignore.

I wouldnt empty the farm, but rentals shouldnt hurt us in the long-term.

A controllable guy like Thor would sure.

Something like Waters plus Wright or Anderson is approximately fair value for Thor.

I would prefer to substitute Riley for Waters if the Mets can be convinced he is an Alonso level bat at 3B.

Folks penciling in both Pache and Waters into the future OF with Acuna are being a little delusional, but I prefer Waters to Riley for sure.

I’d move Anderson up to AAA after the trade deadline if he isn’t traded. I’d like to see him in Atlanta next year to get some real data on him and see if he’s gonna pan out.

A Pache and Anderson package is not gonna happen. I don’t see AA giving up both in the same deal and especially not to the Mets.
