Taking a look at the potential postseason roster

With all our new additions and reinforcements on the way I thought this would be a good time to look at what our playoff roster may look like.

This is the way I see the roster shaping up. I’ve gone with the thought process that we’ll have 3 lefties in the pen as well as 3 catchers and most likely a backup SS besides Culberson on the roster. I believe we’ll carry 12 pitchers and 13 hitters. Some of my bubble players could make the roster if the Braves decide to change that alignment while others strictly have to play their way on.

End Of Season Update

In my end of season update I’ve got Fried in the rotation and I’ve moved Teheran and O’Day to the bullpen. I have Flowers as our primary starter at catcher and added Cervelli to the bench to allow McCann to act as our primary lefty bench bat vs the Cards. I also like Cervelli’s chances not to embarrass himself with the bat in a postseason series against RHP better than Riley’s. With the Cardinals having no lefty SP and Duvall being the first righty off the bench Riley’s opportunities vs LHP would be highly limited.

Below is my final roster

Starting Pitchers

Keuchel
Soroka
Folty
Fried (moved up)

Lefty Relievers

Blevins
Newk

Righty Relievers

Teheran
O’Day (moved up)
Greene
Jackson
Martin
Melancon

Lineup

Acuna
Albies
Freeman
Donaldson
Markakis
Joyce
Swanson
Flowers (moved up)

Bench

McCann
Duvall
Hamilton
Hechavarria
Cervelli (moved up)

Potential Between Series Additions

Riley (moved down)
Inciarte (injured)
Dayton

Injury Only Between Series Additions

Ortega
Tomlin
Swarzak
Murphy (added)

I think I more or less agree with this (though I'd like to find a way to get Riley on there for some pure pop off the bench, it's hard to see who would go), but I rather expect to see Camargo get on there somehow regardless. Snit loves him.

I think it’s at the point where Camargo will just have to try again next year. He fell behind Culberson at SS and then we went outside the organization for help. He’s been worth almost -1 win this year.

Oh, I totally agree with you. I just don't believe Snit will agree with us.

Sobotka or Minter has a MUCH better chance of doing that.

Sobotka has great stuff but he has not been really reliable this year. O’Day has been a reliable pitcher over his career and if he’s pitching well I’d roll with him. Minter could make it but that would effect Teheran’s status more than O’Day’s.

Wait, what?

I'm just trying to figure out how Minter making it would effect Teheran. A.J. isn't going to be starting any games...

Good chance we go with 3 catchers and Hamilton.

Tomlin likely gets supplanted as long man by someone currently in the rotation.

Bullpen and remaining bench spots will be determined by who plays best in September.

I like Hamilton for the speed and defensive replacement at the end of the game. We saw tonight the effect of what that does to the defense. The next month will be very interesting

Besides there is no guarantee Inciarte comes back

They’ve done that before and then pitched poorly in the majors. I’m kinda past the point of caring about their AAA results. They need to get it done in the majors.

Right. They will have to pitch well in September to earn a spot. But I could see Sobotka getting the nod over Swarzak and Minter edging out Blevins.
