Out of sight but not forgotten, Sobotka and Minter have been working away in AAA since being sent down at the end of July.
Of our current pen, Melancon, Jackson, Greene and Martin look pretty sturdy. Swarzak has been shaky, Newk inconsistent and Blevins rusty in part because he can only be used against lefties.
This leaves potential openings for Sobotka and Minter if they can step up in September.
Since being sent down Sobotka has pitched 9.2 innings during which he has given up 7 hits and 2 earned runs. He has walked one and struck out 14. Small sample but pretty good. Especially the one walk.
Minter has not been as good since being sent down and just had a rough outing last night. In 10.2 innings he has given up 12 hits and 5 earned runs. He has walked none and struck out 13.
The absence of walks hints at what they have been working on. They both have big arms and I think at least one of them makes the post-season roster. Both have occasionally gone more than 1 inning in the past month, which is something else that adds to their potential value going forward.
