Josh Donaldson Surplus Value

I think a lot of it will depend on JD. If he really likes it here (close to Alabama) and the other guys (seems like it) then I can see them working something out.

Donaldson's gonna be very disappointed when he finds out the Braves Organization is very cheap in paying the premium for anything. Not AA's fault of course.

less cheap than unwilling to do long-term deals...the strong preference is for 1-2 year deals

The Braves are not going to extend JD before offering a QO. Not unless it is at a discount which JD won’t do. Why would the Braves give JD and extension when they know they will have clear advantage in off season negotiations because they won’t lose a pick if they sign him.

actually they do forego a pick if they sign him

AA since hes been GM has only done 1/1 or 1 year deals for FA's.

I think he could offer a 2 year deal with a higher AAV but i dont see him going 3-4 GTD years.

He’s going to have to at some point. Not everybody is gonna want to sign 1 year deals.

I think the idea is to take your chances on young homegrown stars like Albies and Acuna. Risk-Reward is better in those situations.

There is always high end older talent available for 1-2 year deals.

Donaldson. Keuchel. Grandal. Moose. All excellent players who just signed for a single season.

We’ve seen several instances now where AA was willing to pay top dollar over the short term to bring in an impact player at a position of need. I expect that to be the general strategy moving forward, considering it has lead to 2 very successful seasons.

You think Grandal will go for another 1 year high AAV deal or look for some security?

He already passed up a 4/60 deal from the Mets in favor of a 1/18 deal with the Brewers.

So yeah, I think it's plausible the Braves can get him on a high AAV short term deal.

Think we can dream of a situation where we sign both Grandal and JD?
Now that would be a damn deep lineup...

my friend excel says unlikely...but potentially we could create room for this scenario by not picking up some options (Muk, Flowers, Teheran) or trading players making significant salaries

A deep run in the playoffs could definitely bring in extra money. Not sure if that would help payroll but I’d assume so. JD definitely won’t be signing a 1 year deal but if we somehow signed both then wow.

It would go towards paying off a couple of new stores they're building at the Battery
