Josh Donaldson Surplus Value

This is the exact methodology that gets teams saddled with aging sluggers.

AA is smart enough to properly value a JD contract.

I wouldnt give him a 5 year deal or anything. But i think 2 years is ideal, i think he can get 3 or more and i dont know if AA goes there. Maybe AA takes the comp pick, and uses JD's money across the board.

I don’t expect any JD extension talks to happen before the QO. AA knows he will have a bit more leverage because of the QO being attached. He would be a welcome resign in my book but as many have said has to be right number of years. I would probably go higher in AAV than others.

Are we thinking Rendon is out of our league? Or already signed by the gNats.

He's gonna get 200+ mil.

Elite hitter, elite defender, great clubhouse guy, plays everyday. I'd use just about all our money to get him but i doubt we'd even come close to the final bid on Rendon. I doubt he gets Machado/Harper money but he's gonna be well compensated this winter.

i'd be weary of handing out the deal he's going to get. guy is 29.

That is tough I agree. He is having an MVP type year so that only strengthens his contract. But he is absolutely someone I would love to have. I agree though that I don’t have huge hopes of swimming with the big spenders on him.

I think retaining Donaldson can be a “top priority” without that meaning the Braves sacrifice value or overextent themselves to retain him.

Kyler: What kind of contract do you think Josh Donaldson gets this offseason? He’s old but has been healthy and mashing this year.

Avatar Dan Szymborski: I think he gets a three-year deal for a reasonable amount. Maybe something like Santana originally got from Phillies

That's 3/60, which seems about right for an aging elite slugger with past injury concerns. The Braves hope is that the QO tanks his value such that they can grab him for something like 2/45. They have shown they won't go 3+ years for FAs.

It's also important to note that once JD rejects the QO, the Braves will be in line to pick up a draft pick in the 30s. That essentially means resigning JD at that point will cost them a much more valuable pick than signing Rendon. Will the Braves suddenly change course and give Rendon/Boras 5-6 years? I'm guessing no.

I suggest looking for FAs who can be had on high AAV 1-2 year deals (or equivalent trade targets) if you want to start planning the Braves off season.
