Official Offseason Thread

Need to let DK and Teheran walk. Trade Inciarte and Duvall while they have value. Look at the current crop of relievers that are exiting (O'Day, Swarzak, Martin, Blevins, Tomlin) and decide who, if any, you try to bring back and at what price.

Offer an extension to Freeman to replace current contract (6 years, $120M) would lock him up through his 35 yo season at AAV of $20M per.

Pick up Markakis' option (net $4M), Pick up Flowers' option (net $4M).

Bring back Donaldson - 3 years $70M (25, 25, 20)

Shop for Grandal with Cervelli as the fallback.

Gross.

Not really interested in extending Freeman and I’m not really sure what value Ender has and we likely need Duvall next season.
 
Duvall spent the entire year in AAA. He has no value.

Ender spent most of the year injured. Selling low on him is foolish.

Freeman is an aging 1b...intelligent teams don’t give them 6 years.
 
Looked like once the playoffs rolled around we lost confidence in Flowers. He didn’t play much, and we know the defensive lapses were pretty obvious this season. There any reason to not pick up the option?
 
Flowers not playing any was odd, like he pissed somebody off. Mac was tired and you could tell. We need a full time guy and I hope it’s Grandal on a 2 year deal.
 
IMO AA has to explore the FA availability before even considering trades. Nothing unusual in that. First on my list would be replacing JDs bat more so than his glove or position. Second effort would be a starting pitcher with some value and reputation, i.e. a Wheeler or Odorozzi type not a TOR at this point. Rest can be sorted out before spring training. One thing Im pretty convinced of is that anyone who gets his option exercised should consider himself fortunate. Also think there will likely be lots of non tenders.

After hearing AA say clearly that Free Agency is not the most efficient way to build a team, I would expect modest interest in the FA market, but at least one hole to be more likely filled through trade.

JD notwithstanding, AA was careful, and unwilling to get into bidding wars for free agents last year. We would all do well to remember that.

Not giving Freeman 6 years, giving him 4 years on top of the 2 he's still got and locking him in at a lower AAV than he currently has. Everybody knows I wanted to maximize Freeman's trade value during the rebuild. Since they didn't do that, it signals that they are committed to Freeman through the end of his current deal, his 31 yo season. Anyone paying attention knows that there will be a tremendous ground swell to re-sign Freeman once his deal is done (assuming he doesn't fall off a cliff). I'm just getting out ahead of that by extending him through his 35 season while lowering what he's owed per year over the next two.

Duvall was in AAA because he had no place to play for most of the year. He showed he could still play, at least at a value level commensurate with what he will get in contract. You won't get a ton for him, but a low level guy that has some promise (which the Braves need BTW if you look at the lower minors) is valuable.

Selling low on Inciarte assumes that there is a higher place to be had. He's owed $7, $8 and $9 (or $1+ buyout). At this point, he's not much better than Hamilton and certainly not enough better to justify the dollar difference. If you can find someone to give you something AND take his contract, you're ahead.

The Braves best two prospects (three if you include Riley) are in AAA and at least close to being ready for a shot. Keeping Inciarte and Duvall hanging around at the dollars they will get because of depth concerns is something the Yankees or Red Sox can do, not the Braves, especially when their best in house prospects play that position.

Markakis IS coming back and WILL start somewhere in the OF if Snitker is manager, at least to start the season. Acuna will be out there as well. You could bring back Hamilton, Culberson, Camargo and Riley and bridge the gap until one (or both) of Pache or Waters are ready.

What I don't understand is, with the success of The Battery, how is that not leading to increased payroll?
 
So what’s everybody’s realistic predictions for the offseason? Lets say we have 130/135 million payroll to work with.
 
I personally would let Julio, Dallas, Markakis and Donaldson walk. That would leave us with about 60 mil or so to spend on our biggest needs which is the rotation, 3b and right field. I would look for a couple of veteran starters to fill the SP void, hopefully a lefty and a righty in their 30's. I would look for a veteran 3b. Maybe one that can hit for power and play good defense that would be willing to sign a 3 year deal, even if it's a little pricey. As for RF I'd look into getting a cheap LH bat. A guy with a history of hitting RH's pretty well and I don't necessarily need good defense.

I wouldn’t trade Freeman at all at this point in the middle of contention but I’m a big Chapman fan. The A’s won’t be able to keep him one day but he’s one of the few I’d put Pache in a deal for.

Yeah. I love Chapman. He is basically a young Donaldson.
