Official Offseason Thread

On thing I would do is trade Freddie Freeman for a young controllable top of the rotation starter. That would leave us with a hole at the first base position. An easy way to fix that would be to turn around and trade Soroka to the Cubs for Anthony Rizzo. So to sum up my plan:

Subtactions:
Keuchel
Teheran
Donaldson
Markakis
Soroka
Freeman

Additions:
Veteran LH starter (15 mil or so)
Veteran RH Starter (15 mil or so)
Power hitting 3b with good defense (20ish mil over 3 years)
LH platoon corner outfielder with meh defense (4 mil or so)
Young controllable top of the rotation starter
Anthony Rizzo

I think we can accomplish that this offseason.

I was more talking about their well publicized clubhouse problems. They had a guy smash a TV over too much video game playing. He had another incident where he benched a player via text message.

Their late season collapses have had numerous contributing factors.

I think Kapler's analytics approach gets too much attention. Pretty much every team has tons of analytics at a manager's fingertips these days and if they don't the GM should be fired. Kapler's problems had everything to do with his lack of experience as a coach and/or lack of interpersonal skills. He had no idea how to communicate with his players or with management.

The GM there deserves plenty of criticism but Kapler wasn't succeeding at all.

It always seemed pretty obvious from the start that Kapler packed the interpersonal skills to communicate with his players and help a clubhouse mesh. Dude was literally a robot. We keep seeing the role of MLB manager evolve to the point current day where their main role is to keep the clubhouse happy and manage egos. Most of the directives seem to come from the front office.

Lol so you want to trade Freddie for a "Young ToR starter". Then turn around and trade our own young ToR starter for Anthony Rizzo who is both cheaper and not as good as Freeman (and the same exact age)?

So basically we'd be accomplishing a slight downgrade at first base while saving 7.5 million dollars. The pitching move will, at best, be lateral because I can't imagine a pitcher who is both better than Soroka and more controllable that any sane team would be willing to part with.

You had to know that this is the most unrealistic plan you could ever come up with.

What I am about to posit here certainly is open to criticism at the very least..... This mornings article on MLBTradeRumors poses some very interesting bits to say the least. So having read it twice and pondered here goes:
Rockies need payroll relief for sure. Inspection of their prospect list shows a considerable shortage of pitching prospect. Storey, Jon Gray and McGee will cost right at $27M next year. Gray should/could fit nicely at the tail of our rotation, McGee could be the LH reliever needed if Newk goes back to start. Storey is the key IMO as he would be pretty good batting cleanup if Donaldson is out of reach. Question is how much prospect wealth can be given up?

Next up is an article in the Detroit Free Press recently that Matt Boyd and Buck Farmer will be long gone before the rebuild is complete. Combined arb projection around $9M. Funny thing Tigers are loaded with pitching prospects near arrival. Two of biggest needs going into 2020 for Detroit (need to put on a face saving effort) are a SS to replace Jordy Mercer and a CF who can walk and chew gum> Would Swanson and Inciarte be enough. Dollars are almost equal.

Forgot to mention that Rockies #1 prospect is a SS who is ready for ML if recovers from surgery as expected.

Story would be an awesome get. He’s not bad away from Coors field and isn’t a FA till after 2022. Swanson and Wright would be a good start.

Story has 2 years of control, i doubt we'd trade the farm for him.

I'd call Oakland and see what it would cost to get Chapman, one of the few players i'd move Pache+ for.

The only part of that trade proposal that is reasonable is getting Boyd from Detroit now that he’s proven he’s not the ace the Tigers thought they were selling, and the price has dropped accordingly.

Speaking of Detroit, they failed to sell high on both Fulmer and Boyd, deciding to hold onto them because “they didn’t need to trade him yet”. They are showing exactly what not to do during a rebuild.

Can you say it a third time for the people in the back?

RF- Acuna, 2B- Albies, 1B- Freeman, 3B- Donaldson, C- Grandal, LF- Joyce, SS- Dansby, CF- Hamilton

C- Hedges, INF- Camargo, IF/OF- Culberson, IF/OF- Riley

Smith, Melancon, Newcomb, O'Day, Dayton, Jackson, Minter/Davidson, Sobotka/Webb/Walker/Touki

Total 2020 Opening Day Payroll - ~ $131,050,000

Platoon Riley and Joyce to begin the season rather than bringing the much more expensive Markakis/Duvall back. If you're going to have an offensive black hole, why not the cheaper Hamilton rather than Ender? Waters and Pache replace Joyce and Hamilton whenever they're ready (2021 is fine) and Acuna can stay on a corner. If Grandal continues to catch 130-ish games Hedges' salary can't escalate overwhelmingly, and he provides Flowers'-like defense to be Yasmani's caddy for the length of his deal (buying time for Contreras and Langeliers). Gamble on Soroka and Fried taking steps forward and staying healthy with full workloads - the younger Bumgarner replaces Keuchel on a short-term deal. Roll the dice with the expectation that the combination of Wilson/Wright/Weigel/Anderson/Davidson competently replaces Julio. Smith instead of Greene gives you that lock-down lefty with closing experience that allows you to keep the threat of Newk in the 6th and 7th innings, possibly making Dayton and Minter awfully scary LOOGYs (plus you could potentially plug Davidson in in that role when needed).

Sorry, but your payroll numbers are highly inaccurate. The Braves currently have 63,559,375 committed to 2020, and that's assuming all options are not picked up. We'll call it 64 million to round things up. Even if you don't tender Duvall and Greene, that's only about another 10ish million saved. So that's 54 million committed. Dumping Ender for Hedges (terrible value btw) gets you to 50 million. But then you must figure roughly 15 million for the arbitration cases of Folty, Swanson, Culberson, Jackson, and Dayton which I don't see that you have cut any of them. That's 65 million. Then figure another 5-10 million for pre-arb players, so we'll split it and say 7 million. That's 72 million committed to 2020. With a 130 million dollar opening day payroll, that's only 58 million available to spend this off-season, which is nowhere close to 78 million.

Also, I rather doubt JD accepts such an offer after the season he just had. He may be willing to accept the length of that contract, but he will certainly be looking for a higher AAV than he made in 2019. My guess is JD is looking for closer to 30 million in AAV for 2-3 seasons. Grandal deal is probably pretty close.

Lastly, Billy Hamilton is not a starter on any playoff team. We honestly would be better off sticking Waters/Pache in CF to start the year than go with Hamilton.
