The Braves WON'T get a pick in the 30s if/when Donaldson signs elsewhere - that pick will come in the 70s. Tougher to make the argument against signing a QO free-agent if AA feels the window really is open and he wants to win with the current group. Losing a pick (and the accompanying pool money) isn't ideal, but given the relative few holes to fill it's not as bad a proposition as some make it out to be - the only team gaining a pick at the end of the 1st round will be the Twins if someone gives Odorizzi more than $50 million.

Wonder if the next signing we hear about (assuming a Donaldson re-signing isn't already close) is AA adding a LHRP on the cheap to fill out the pen before the market really gets rolling. Several pretty good options out there that aren't the top guys that might pounce on an early offer - Jake Diekman, Robbie Erlin, Francisco Liriano, and Aaron Loup to name a few - names we were even connected to at the deadline last season. If he could pick up one of those guys on a deal similar to the one they gave O'Day, the pen would be set and he could focus solely on 3B/SP/C and potential trades.

Which would everybody prefer? Grandal and Moose or Contreras and Donaldson? The choice for me is obviously Contreras and JD. I think that’ll be the only way that AA will go 3 guaranteed years with an option is if he can upgrade the offense even further with a cheap (financially) option to fill another hole. AA has the pieces to get Contreras if he wants and he’s really available.

Since the Braves did not receive revenue sharing money in 2019 (only the Twins will get a pick in the 30s for Odorizzi), and JD's compensation pick will be in the 70s/80s, the entire calculus on resigning him changes rather significantly.

Adding Castro along with JD now seems a lot more likely. Grandal plus JD plus a SP seems a little too rich for the Braves budget.

I think I'd prefer Castro/JD, depending on how many years it takes to get JD and Grandall.

So which is it? Did the Braves receive revenue sharing or not?
 
There's still a chance all the holes could be filled with upgrades if - obviously a big IF - AA would consider 2 blockbusters. The question is, would he?

We keep glossing over the earlier mention about the intent to stretch Newk back out this winter. If he's added back to the rotation mix, would they consider trading two of Wilson/Wright/Anderson?

If you included one of Wilson, Wright, or Anderson plus Ender and Flowers (and possibly filler) in a Contreras/Happ deal and one of Wilson, Wright, or Anderson plus Duvall and Jenista or Trey Harris in a Kluber/Hand deal, could they do both? That would give you your "Ace" in Kluber, your shutdown lefty/closer for the pen, your Catcher in Contreras, a platoon of Markakis/Happ in LF (with Happ as the backup CF to Acuna). Re-sign Joyce for $2 million to platoon with Riley/Culberson in RF, Cervelli for $2 million to backup Contreras and you'd still have almost $25 million left to pay Donaldson.

Couple AA tidbits from today.

Alex Anthopoulos cited catcher and rotation as primary areas #Braves are trying to improve. He was less concerned with bullpen. Sounded happy with internal options.

#Braves' Anthopoulos on Newcomb: “The thought is we’ll let him compete and get stretched out. We don’t know what rotation additions we might add, but the thought right now is to give him an opportunity to get stretched out in the spring and compete for a spot (in rotation).... More Anthopoulos on #Braves' Sean Newcomb: "... unless there’s other trades or signings or things like that. But right now he would like an opportunity to start and it makes sense for us to at least have him stretched out in spring and then go from there.”
 
I'd rather see Newk learning how to air it out in the BP rather than continuing to force the SP route. How many times do we have to watch the same thing?

the article straight from mlb.com says the Braves are out. So we get a crappy pick for Donaldson.
 
I’ll say this. I really like Josh. He had a monster year, but tapered off near the end and didn’t do much in the playoffs. That’s what the older guys do many times...they wear down.

He isn’t young, he showed signs of running out of gas in the last month of the season. He has a injury history. He is likely to continue to deteriorate each year (most likely slowly though).

I would love to have him back on a fair deal. If the bidding gets really high....I would stay away. At best he has one more year that is close to the one he just had. We would be better off to go in a different direction if the money gets crazy
