Braves Sign Will Smith

The math "could work", but what kind of deal are they looking at that upgrades the rotation without absolutely backing up the truck? What inexpensive SP is honestly available that doesn't cost you multiple guys from our Top 5-7 prospects?

Maybe they're sold enough on Soroka/Fried/Folty at the front of the rotation that they're willing to try to make the pen bulletproof, but does anyone really believe that's what's going to happen? If Newk/Wright/Wilson/Weigel/Anderson/etc. can't get through a lineup twice, is AA honestly going to let them have the #4 and #5 slots?

Will Smith 13
Grandal 18
Haniger min
Moose 10
Wood 8m

Inciarte -7

Something like that might work. Call it 140 and you can sign a better starter

$8 million for Alex and his injury concerns as an upgrade over the young arms? Might rather have Julio back. Would Seattle take Ender's money back? If not, who can you pawn him off on without giving him away?

There are a few ways AA could go. JD and Contreras or Moose, Haniger, and Wheeler? Grandal could be in play too. After today and signing Smith there’s no telling what will happen next.

I was nodding my head until I disagreed with everything you said in the last paragraph.

I've made many mistakes in the past. I think Bumgarner has a lot left in the tank. Not trying to give him 20 per year but I think he would be great to have around the kids.

A sneaky favorite of mine has always been Trey Mancini - would fit perfectly behind Freddie if you find a taker for Ender. If AA could come up with a favorable deal involving a young arm for Mancini and Mychal Givens, you could let Greene walk and it'd only cost you ~ $2.5 million based on MLBTR's projected arbitration figures and it wouldn't kill your rotation depth. Then maybe spin off Ender and an arm for Kluber.

Acuna - $1 million
Albies - $1 million
Freddie - $22 million
Mancini - $5.7 million
Grandal - $18 million
Riley - $600 K
Markakis - $4 million
Dansby - $3.3 million

Kluber - $13.5 million
Soroka - $600 K
Fried $ 600 K
Folty - $7.5 million
Newk/kids - $ 600 K

Melancon - $14 million
Smith - $13 million
Givens - $3.2 million
Dayton - $800 K
O' Day - $2.25 million
Minter - $600 K
Jackson - $1.9 million
who cares? - $600 K

Flow - $4 million
Camargo - $1.6 million
Culberson - $1.8 million
Duvall - $3.8 million
FA CF until Pache comes up - $2 million

Just over $136 million.

Is it possible for you to post without it taking up half the page? And did you really have to list out the entire team?? Come on!

He also just learned how to use quotes, and now loves to write rhetorical questions like..what else do you "need"?

Love it haha.

Except his splits are clear from the past 2 years he can’t pitch outside of SanFran

I wonder what it would take to get him to retire and just become out pitching coach?

Home/Road splits are not the gospel. Lots of pitchers pitch better at home. Lots pitch better on the road.

I have no doubt that there could be one thousand different metrics all pointing to the same thing in regards to Bumgarner and half the fanbase would insert their index fingers into their ears while screaming "Lalalalalalalalalalala can't hear you lalalala playoff pitcher lalalala clutch lalalalala World Series MVP lalalalalalalalalalalala"

Giving up a pick for the right to pay Bumgarner for 3+ years is a terrible idea.

So is giving up a pick for the right to pay a 30 year old BP arm 10% of the projected payroll for 3 years, but that just happened.

As far as I’m concerned, AA could very well give Bumgarner $70M because...why not?

Going to be beyond interesting to see some folks' ramblings when AA goes out and signs both Donaldson and Bumgarner,

I think this signing is somewhat of a reaction to last offseason and the struggles of the pen early this year. AA didn't add a single pitcher until the end of ST when he picked up Tomlin off the scrap heap. That came back and bit him big time as the pen was a mess until the trade deadline. Now we're entering the season with Smith, Meloncon, and Greene anchoring the back end of the pen. Should be a much more stable pen.

Losing the pick may be overstated in this deal. It's possible AA's offseason plan includes signing someone else that would have caused us to lose the pick anyway. Alternatively, maybe he's planning on getting a pick for JD and he's put so much of the team's resources into the major league club that the budget for the draft doesn't include what an additional pick would cost. Who knows at this point. We'll have to wait and see how it shakes out.

Just to recap the offseason so far :

Cut Julio
Added Will Smith aka the best closer available
Signed O Day to a cheap deal
