Braves sign Travis D’Arnaud

It’s probably important for folks to realize that while the Braves won 97 games, they were among the luckiest teams in baseball in terms of higher order winning percentages. Those metrics pegged the Braves as a true talent 90-92 win team in 2019.

Their 28-16 record in 1 run games in incredibly unlikely to be sustained in 2020. When that record regresses to something closer to .500, the win total will suffer as a result.

So maybe lose 5 from regression, gain 5 from the pen...and come out a little ahead if the youngsters continue to break out

I think its fairly certain they'll sign a veteran pitcher at a minimum. Most likely in the 6-8m range.

Yep, dont see them going into the year without a vet SP added. Or via trade. 3B and SP are the most likely next moves, not totally sold on outfield being filled with Nick, Acuna, Ender, Duval, and Pache likely to debut at some point.

Why are folks making win predictions at the start of the offseason ? Seems to be pointless with so much that can change.

Sit back, pop a PBR and enjoy us making moves

By that unassailable logic we may as well never make predictions. So much can change over the course of a baseball season.

It sure would save TCO some hosting charges.

You do love to fill a page with 1000 word posts or is that clv? I get you both mixed up.

This is not a sexy signing but it is a smart one. Fills a hole while hopefully still allowing for enough money for an impact bat and maybe a starting pitcher. Also, it being two years gives us a chance to see what we have in Langeliers.

Based on my latest calculations. This signing gives the Braves an increase of 1.8 wins for the next season.
Having an apostrophe in your name is something the baseball analytics world really has a liking to.

Apparently Travis d’Arnaud’s nickname is “little d.”

it means that at some point in the history of his paternal lineage they were part of the petit nobilité

the braves have done well with frenchies

and of course d'Arnaud is also part filipino

much to like from an ethno-analytical perspective

Have any of the beat writers thought to ask Anthopolous how the Braves intend on using the 26th roster spot.

I could see a good ol fashioned NL team using it to carry three catchers.

With the way they are stockpiling bull pen arms, I assume we'll use it there.

Only can have 13 pitchers.

Why am I not as stoked about this Travis signing. He was ****ty all his career and then had a good year with juiced balls and crappy AL pitching. Maybe he found something but I think we are going to be disappointed with him by mid June.

****ty all his career..?

2014 - 2.8 WAR
2015 - 3.4
2016 - 1.0 (75 games)
2017 - 1.4
2018 - hurt
2019 - 1.6

define "****ty"

He is on the wrong side of 30. Same side platoon and never been great offensively except one year. Just another neck in the lineup. Should be fun. But we got good value. So there is that.

i'm just pointing that you're wrong to say he's been "****ty his whole career" outside of last year with "juiced balls and bad AL pitching." it just didn't make any sense, tbh. he's a solid catcher and has been for a while.

D'Arnaud 1.6 fWAR in 103 games in 2019

McCann 1.1 fWAR in 85 games

Maybe half a win extra. Maybe.

The improvement is coming from the pen. We are largely holding serve elsewhere.

To Be Fair...

D'Arnaud pinch hit a lot

Mac actually played 7 more games in the field (and started 17 more) while getting 50 less PAs.

What does this mean? I don't know. But D'Arnaud seems a pretty clear upgrade over Mac.
