Braves sign Cole Hamels 1 year 18 million

I really like that AA is aggressive early in the offseason in adding quality players to the roster. Rather than take a risk he goes after the most reasonable option decisively. Takes a lot of pressure off as we get deeper into things. Also, that's what she said.

If they can finish this off by bringing Donaldson back for 3 ,years I think they will have done a decent job of putting the team in position to win. Knee-jerk reaction is that AA called Donaldson's people the minute Hamels agreed to terms and offered 3/$75 million (maybe with a 4th year option with a club option that becomes a player option if he's still putting up serious numbers) and gave him until Monday to accept.

This market is moving way faster than anyone expected (don't let posters here kid you), and if Josh isn't willing to bet on himself for that 4th year, AA needs to move on to Ozuna (or a trade) if they want a legitimate middle of the order bat. If AA waits until the end of the winter meetings to chase Ozuna, he's not going to be there to chase.

This part has always been a bit overrated, but it's probably not something you can simply throw away.

I don't think Keuchel/Hamels/etc. come in and suddenly become Leo II, but I also think some of the young arms are smart enough to simply watch guys like that and pick up useful information here and there. As long as you don't have your head buried in your smartphone when you're sitting in the dugout on nights they pitch you can't help but realize that they're getting hitters out with 70% of the stuff you possess. If you're not watching them relatively closely and asking them questions here and there, you're not very interested in trying to have a career that extends beyond the 6 years of control the team has over you.

Newk issues are between his ears IMO. He needs someone to to see if he be a starter. Hearing him and Sirius talk about pitching it’s night and day.

His problem is that some innings he just can't throw a strike with his fastball.
 
I may be in the minority here, but even after AA's comments on Newk I can see him traded. It could've been to frame him as a starter for a trade, knowing AA.

I was 40 when I decided to read the first one to find out if it was appropriate for my daughter. I finished it a couple if days later and knocked out the rest if the series over the next few weeks. Great books.
