What to do with Uggla now?

Interesting to look at the Steamer 2014 hitting projections for the second basemen currently on our roster:

La Stella .764 OPS
Uggla .706
Pena .652
Pastornicky .685

They have Howie Kendrick at .738.

Not that I think he's incapable of posting numbers at that level, but it's still a pretty optimistic projection for LaStella.

Yeah. And the number on Pena looks low to me.

Eh — I've never been a Peña fan, and I think his levels of production early last season were illusory, and likely would have fallen had he played the whole season. Still, I could see him with an OPS closer to .700, or even a bit above, as long as he never comes to the plate against any LHP.

Agree. Counting on last years stats ex'd out for the whole year is a fools errand. I wouldn't expect near that level going forward.

Got to give LaStella a chance IMO. If he works out then the Braves have all types of options. Need to roll the dice when you have so much less money than half the league.

.700 from Pena is realistic imo. I'd be happy with a combination of that sort of offensive performance plus strong defense. I also agree he needs to sit when a lefty is on the mound.

Pena's good for IF supersub and occasional starts. Nice that Janish & E. Johnson were non-tendered. They're fringe players/fodder to fill AAA lineup.

With Cano going to the Mariners, I wonder if we could swing Uggla yo the Yankees. They certainly could afford him.

Why doesn't it come as a surprise that there are "Uggla to Yankees" brainfarts here already? Plenty of more affordable and better options for any team looking at 2B. Plus, if they were really interested in Uggla, the first person they'd ask is their new catcher.

Because, from the Braves standpoint, as a team, it is logical to look into whether the Yankees have interest or not instead of assuming things like you are. Whether it would happen or not, who knows; however, if a team in the Braves situation didn't look into it... that would be the 'brainfart'.

I wonder if the Yankees have any interest in moving some of their catching now that McCann is locked down. I'd imagine they keep Cervelli, but what about Romine? Would be an interesting piece to use interchangeably with Gattis and would allow Bethancourt more time to develop or to become tradebait.

Just going out on a limb here, but let's assume there is no trade market for Dan Uggla. No matter what he's getting paid by the Braves. Now I know people think he can turn it around, but let's no kid ourselves here. He's more of a detriment to the team than he is good. Why not just release him all together and open up another roster spot for anyone else. Uggla would only be hurting this team financially instead of performance and finances.

I think he should be on a short leash. But I wouldn't release him right now. At a minimum I would have him come to spring training and see what happens.

We have Doppleganger Fredi for that.

That's right, Wren would never know what moves to make without first checking comments on this board.
