The Coronavirus, not the beer

We made it shockingly far without the president’s manifest unfitness for office touching the life of the average person and that seems set to change in the near future.

Trump is chomping at the bit to sell over-priced, ineffective flu medicine to the America people and make a quick million or 50.

Now that grandma or granpa's life might be on the line, competence has become a thing to a lot of previously oblivious voters.

Updating two days later, Italy up to 148 deaths. 3,297 active cases. 562 closed cases. 54% of active cases are hospitalized.

Either Italy is dealing with a more virulent version of the virus or they are significantly undercounting the number of infected people.

And 2 days later, Italy up to 5,883 cases (active and closed) and 233 deaths.

WSJ reporting on a draft decree from the prime minister's office that would lock down 10 million people in Lombardy and surrounding regions. People violating the lockdown would be punished by fines and jail.

I do not like Matty Y in the least bit...

But it’s hard to dispute his point. Trump, at his best, was only ever suited as a peace time president. It’s genuinely terrifying to have him handle a crisis.

Well, there was his reaction to Puerto Rico and his treatment of asylum seekers.
Or those arent crisis ?

I honestly wonder what Matt Y thinks could have been done to magically stop Coronavirus. Coronavirus bears a lot of similarities to the flu. Flu has already killed between 20,000 and 50,000 Americans this year, just like it does every year. Does every president fail every year by not stopping the flu?

Pandemic viruses are going to happen and there's only so much that can be done to combat them. Wash your hands frequently, get your vaccines, isolate yourself if symptomatic, and go live your life.

The virus would spread with best practices. What best practices can do is buy time. We're going to find out that our medical care system operates on a thin margin of spare capacity. It has been stressed in recent years and is about to get overwhelmed. Best practices can make a big difference.

“Isolate yourself if symptomatic” sounds really simple unless you’re depending on a paycheck to keep the lights on.

I work for a nonprofit that focuses on food insecurity. As such I work in communities where a significant portion of the population is food-insecure. You think those people can afford to “isolate themselves if symptomatic”? And here’s the fun part—those are the *recipients* of food aid. A lot of the *donors* of food aid (local grocery stores and restaurants) are companies whose workers are just a whisker from needing assistance themselves. With a couple of notable and noble exceptions, those folks are under tremendous pressure to come to work. Because their families need the check. Because they’ll get fired if they don’t.

“Isolate yourself if symptomatic” sounds really simple unless you can’t afford to miss work.

True. It is a big ask for some people. But that doesnt mean the ones who can do it shouldn't.

Glad to see the lead Spokesvictim chime in.

Where did I say this was the only crisis? I criticized Trump multiple times about PR and asylum seekers. I don’t even like Trump.

There is no way you have a single friend. It’s never enough for someone to agree with you they have to undergo a purity test.

Does it strike anyone how much Trumps response to this is so much like China's response? As in deny as much as possible, PR is the top priority, and they get mad at anyone who reports bad news. Only difference is Trump cant physically send goons to get people.

Very strange the back and forth on if and when they should be allowed to disembark.

And why is the current plan to keep the crew quarantined on board after the passengers are disembarked? Shouldn't the crew be taken care of the same way?

Stopping it was impossible. That's why the President should not have claimed they were stopping it and put more effort in getting the system ready to handle it. He floundered and delayed for months when he should've been listening to those who knew.

This is like arguing over whether someone should have shouted louder at a storm or not. The storm is going to blow in regardless of how loud you yell.

It's more like a hurricane coming and one guy drawing a map showing it's going somewhere else and another guy buying supplies to reinforce his windows and protect his property. The second guy might still suffer some damage, but most of the time he comes out better than the first guy.

chosen one on Feb 27: "the 15, within a couple days, is going to be down close to zero."

that's veteran laidership for you

I've been listening to Steve Bannon's War Room podcast, which is a surprisingly good podcast, and they've been joking around about Raheem Kassam potentially having the Wuhan virus because he's been sick for a while. Turns out he may actually really have coronavirus because he was around the CPAC guy who has it. Some other popular twitter folk may have been exposed as well including Matt Gaetz and Diamond and Silk. Crazy.

Why are you calling it the Wuhan virus?
