Braves Sign Matt Adams

clvclv and I were discussing him the other day after he opted out of his minor league deal with the Mets, but I can't remember seeing his signing reported here until now.

Not surprised. With Puig's status up in the air, Ozuna probably goes back to LF against RHP with Adams DHing and Duvall goes to LF/Ozuna to DH against LHP.

I was surprised that Adams had to settle for a minor league contract with a camp invite over the winter. He's no world-beater, but there are worse guys sitting at the end of a lot of big league benches. His downside is he's a one position guy (and not very good defensively at that position), but he's got the light-tower power.

Yeah - not a "seer" by any stretch, but this move just seemed pretty obvious...I don't see any way they'd add Ball to the roster in the next 2 months unless there was a five alarm fire at Truist, but can't imagine anybody wanting to be in the position where we'd have to play Alonso if Freddie has to miss time.

Also just noticed DOB tweeted that Vaughn Grissom has been added to the pool - can Michael Harris be far behind? (Actually thought Harris might've been added before Ball or Grissom.)

Harris has already been added; first reported four or five days ago.

JMO, but an Adams/Dietrich combo is a pretty significant upgrade from Alonso/Culberson.

(If only in my mind - haven't looked at any numbers.)

Please tell me this is Marquise’s son.

I guess the question is whether he is the DH vs RHP.

Traditionally he's been above average and occasionally he's destroyed it. Last year he was below average.

I referenced it a different thread, but the thing about Adams is that if he gets on a roll, everything he seems to hit goes out. His numbers were down last season so he's likely trending in the wrong direction making it a toss of the dice. But in an abbreviated season when the value of every game is magnified and there's the universal DH, he's a risk worth taking.

Would still like to add Dietrich - maybe he could replace Solarte since somebody seems dead-set on keeping Culberson. Dietrich just seems to fit so much better than Charlie OR Solarte with his pop and ability to handle 1B, 2B, or LF - another LH bat with pop (that can actually play defense, unlike Alonso) would be AWFULLY nice. Of course one could argue that Waters could be that guy in 10 days if they'd rather keep Culberson.

I understand Snitker's comment about "signing Ozuna to be our LF", but with Camargo and Riley both capable of handling LF defensively it would seem like having Marcell DH against righties would represent the smartest play - simply to get him off his feet every so often. Could do the same thing at 1B - give Freddie a day off his feet each week vs. a RHP and let Adams play 1B (could slide Riley over there if you wanted to give him a blow against a lefty).
