doesn't prove masks don't make a difference

there are a multitude of variables that come into play

some that help sweden...smallest average household size in Europe...largest percentage of one person household...low population density...social distancing has been voluntary but there has been consistent messaging on its importance...Google mobility data show that Swedes have not gone back to pre-covid lifestyles...rules have been tightened on nursing home visits...restaurants who did not follow regulations have been shut down...

in spite of all that Sweden has done very poorly compared to its neighbors

the fact cases have come down without widespread use of masks doesn't mean the outcome wouldn't have been better if they had gone with a mask mandate

i think the closest thing to a natural experiment on masks has been Arizona and Texas...and there has been a notable reduction in hospitalizations there after the governors backtracked on masks

Conversely, the fact that cases have come down because of a government position on mask wearing doesnt indicate their effectiveness.

it is possible that other factors are at work...i'm sure the people of Texas and Arizona took things more seriously as cases spiked up...interestingly the governor of Florida has chosen a different course from the governors of Texas and Arizona...so we can watch those three states and perhaps draw an inference

Wouldn't surprise me. But then again, Putin would love to be the one to develop the vaccine and use as leverage vs the rest of the world.

Can the chuckleheads in the Philippines put their masks back on? They have a mandate since April. They must have taken them off last few weeks because they are seeing a massive spike in New cases.

Nearly 6k new cases today.

this mask mandate thing mississippi is trying is scary

what if mississippi becomes another Hawaii or a Japan or a Philippines. That would be terruble.

The thing that is really disingenuous is if cases decrease its because masks helped although we don't what the original pattern is witbout masks while if cases rise in a mask area it didnt rise as much as it would have even though we don't know the reality without the masks.
