I need to vent on this Duck Dynasty "Controversy".

Freeedom of speech was exercised by the article being published. Part of freedom is dealing with the consequences of your actions. I can say whatever I want, but if I call my boss a raging douchebag at a party and it gets around to him or a number of other examples, I can lose my job.

This is what someone with much more knowledge than I has to say

Kermit Roosevelt, a constitutional law professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, said the issue is not actually a First Amendment violation.

“The First Amendment, like the constitution generally, only applies to the government, so if the government stops someone from talking or punishes them, that’s a First Amendment issue. If a private person says I won’t hire you or let you be on TV anymore, that’s not,” Roosevelt said.

“The idea is we don’t let the government decide what’s a good opinion, but we do let individuals decide what they think is offensive and what should be rewarded and what should be discouraged. That’s the way the marketplace of ideas is supposed to work,” he said.

Roosevelt also pointed out that the U.S. has anti-discrimination laws that bar a company from firing someone for their race or religion, but allow it to fire someone if they have opinions the company doesn’t like.

“There’s a line that is difficult to draw between religious beliefs and religiously motivated conduct, but what the Supreme Court has said is you can’t treat people differently because of their beliefs but if those beliefs lead them to engage in certain actions, you can treat them like someone who had engaged in those actions for a nonreligious belief,” he said.

This is my issue, they asked his opinion and he gave it. Don't ask someone's opinion if you aren't willing to accept it. Sounds like to me they were baiting him to say something so they could start a witchhunt against him. I don't get Duck Dynasty, I think it's one of the dumbest shows on TV and for the life of me I don't understand it's popularity but as a Christian I'm getting sick and tired of this issue and the response to it. Guess what, we as bible believing Christians disagree with your lifestyle. It's not gonna ever change. It's one of the many sins the Bible speaks out against. If they are as tolerant and open minded as they claim to be then just let us voice our disapproval and move on. Why does it bother them so much that not everyone agrees with them? Why are they so protected?

A&E has a right to do whatever they want but I hope they aren't surprised when they lose a lot of viewers in the process. I also wouldn't be surprised if the family pulled the show from their network. Then who is going to watch A&E?
 
Ok I'm gonna weigh in cause everyone and their grandmother has. Sadly I think Gilesfan has an almost correct opinion. Haven't said that in a long time.

Here's my take on this.

He's allowed to have whatever opinions he wants and can say whatever he wants. A&E has every right towho suspend him. His fans have every right to be upset at his suspension. GLADD and others have every right to be offended.

Basically this was someone who isn't a celebrity falling into a common trap (for lack of a better word) where instead of saying what you want you just don't issue a comment or you stir the topic away. He didn't and he's paying the price. In the end he will be back on the show and in a year or 2 this won't be an issue.

It will be sooner than that. He is their cash cow. He is getting a lot of people behind him. THANK GOD. GLAAD is getting on my nerves just like the NAACP. Any slight whatsoever put their panties in bunch. Someone needs to put them in their place.

No wonder the world is going to heck in a hand basket. We did not have these issues in the 70's, 80's or 90's.

People interested in buying delinquent storage units, parking wars, drug addicts get intervention... and whatever. There's always something new.

Reality TV is so cheap they can come up with a stupid idea and people will watch. Just look at Honey Boo Boo.

You didn't have these issues back then because ***s had no power. That's like someone in the 60s saying the Negros didn't act like this in the 30s 40s or 50s. Equality should be universal. Not comparative to the past. GLADD and NAACP exist for a reason.

It's still like that today but not as bad as it was half a century ago. Otherwise you and I would be posting on separate forums than zito wes and Bedell. Sturg would be posting on stormfront.:cooter:

True, my parents brings it up a lot.

I was looking at pictures from the 1920's and 30's of my family and asked dad when they integrated how tough it was. He said they threw rocks at them until they decided to retaliate.

I was like, dayuum, rocks. Then he made me laugh so much that it felt good. He said this to me.

"D, remember we all played semi-pro baseball (I think some have access to my photos on Facebook to back this up) and we can throw harder and further. After sending a couple of kids to the hospital, they stopped throwing rocks."

It still makes me feel good hearing him say that.

I'm still not convinced that Robertson wasn't being both true to his convicts and a really smart dude. These guys are rich. They'll get even richer from all this. And according to them, and quite publicly, they haven't liked how A&E has tried to tone down how their faith is presented in the show. Maybe, they are ready to move on and this really got the ball rolling.

Or, and while I tend not to think this, I don't think we rule it out - this is a big publicity stunt on A&E and the Robertson's part, like CK86 suggests.

I would suggest Bedell not watch the above video since the guy rails against Christianity for a few seconds, but for those of you who do, he makes very very valid points one of which is how fake the Duck Dynasty thing is.
