GDT 9/9/20 - Albies Returns

Agreed in the fantastic result. Riley i think has a higher ceiling. League/age comparisons and all.

Jake Lamb had OBP north of 333 in both 16 and 17. Riley still isn't sniffing 300.

I'd love for Riley to be peak Jake Lamb. I think people think that is an insult b/c Lamb wasn't famous and his peak was very very short. Riley as a 2-3 WAR player is very valuable and a great outcome. Lamb was also a negative defensively and I think Riley won't be a negative on defense. I'm not sure if he's plus because of range, but I think he'll be able to play well over there in his 20s. Keeping Wash would help.

I'm not going to sign off on Riley being the future unless he can get his OBP to start with a 3. I think he can. The at bats are better. He seems to get to a 3 ball count often. If he keeps hitting well, then pitchers will be more careful and walk him some more. But I need to see it first.

Its currently starting with a 3 (with what for him is a hot streak). Lets see where it normalizes at the end of time year. 325 is the range I'm looking for.

Per baseball reference his OBP is .289. It is less than 300.

I'm not going to do arbitrary endpoints. At least in my evaluation. I like the trend but I want to go to baseball reference and see a 3. That is a really low bar for starting hitter at a corner position. It's not close to there yet.

Baseball reference isn't updated after last night's game.

It appears riley has turned a corner. Im eager to see if he continues his historical developmental track. If that's the case I think a OBP in the 325 range by end of the season is feasible.

Duvall has 11 HRs and a 151 wRC+ vs RHP. I'd say that benching the weakest hitter in the majors in his favor has turned out ok. Probably wouldn't have happened if the org didn't think Ender was toast though.

Oddly, his exit velocity is down significantly from last season in a comparable number of plate appearances.

One things is certain, since he was sent down to AAA he has been punishing pitchers.

Getting that Beetus under control Wilford Brimley (RIP) style was the key.

So it is. Let's see it stay that way.

Can Duvall just be our David Ortiz? You know a part time situational power hitter who just turned into a beast later in life?

Well yeah because he started the year dreadful. All the sudden he’s working counts and getting walks and hardly striking out. Could just be a small sample streak or it could be he has figured something out. That would fit with the rest of his career at a new level. Obviously he won’t always be this hot but I don’t really consider his OBP his ceiling right now considering he started out awful but now looks like a different player. I mean dude is only 23.

How can we tell if Duvall’s success versus righties is legit? If his righty success is the least bit real, have we found something pretty cool here?
