Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

i'm confused about the assumption that Ozuna will slack off? what do we know about his "makeup"?

We just read earlier in this thread that he showed up to March spring training out of shape!! His wife and son had to convince him to get in shape lol. The guy is 29 years old and can barely move in the field.

some guys are just bad defenders, or are just slow, and/or just don't have great arms.
he bet on himself by taking a one-year deal over a multi-year deal. if he were so eager to slack off, why take a one-year deal?
yall can be so weird.

The weird one is the one that bets millions on himself by taking a one year deal and then shows up out of shape, sorry.

These are not robots. They are human with distractions, life, feelings, sickness and everything else that can cause bad decisions sometimes. That is not a character flaw.

It's literally their job to make sure they stay in shape. Someone who'd show up out of shape in a make or break year to me is a red flag. Listen I love Ozuna and the results we got. But for a mid payroll franchise like ours, giving out a huge contract to Ozuna could be crippling if it doesn't work out.

Nope, but weighing out two guys to offer something to... should it not play in? A guy that lives in the gym or film room vs someone that admittedly gets offtrack and distracted on his off season plan?

lmao but that bet is going to pay off? what are you talking about?
he's going to safely win the bet he put on himself. what an absolute moron, right?
it's amazing to take some vague story he told of falling out of shape and applying all of this meaning to it.

every time someone says something like this, everyone who reads it gets dumber.
vague cliches are a poor argument.
if Ozuna gets off track for a few weeks but quickly turns it around and has a great season, why would i care?
extracting all of this information from his vague story is dumb.

let me ask you, how much time did he spend "in the film room" in the offseason?
how much time does the average player spend in the film room in the offseason? compare the two for me, since you apparently now know Ozuna wasn't doing his duty there. i'm curious.

A good rule of thumb...

When you're the one arguing with multiple people about the same thing on different fronts, it doesn't appear that you're changing anyone's minds.

Someones work habits should absolutely factor into a large financial commitments.

Kudos for him to be able to overcome a lapse... not everyone can.

Safe to say that Ender’s 1 million dollar buyout will be exercised and he will no longer be on the team.

The additions of Pache and Contreras to the playoff roster at least make you wonder whether their clocks will be gamed to start the 2021 season.

I still think they will be, but that conversation becomes a little more interesting now. Twins called up Kirilloff to take Donaldson's spot, Rays called McClanahan up, and the Astros added McCormick.

If all these guys have been added because their organizations think there's a chance they could contribute if called up now (and they might look to sign them before they reach arbitration anyway), paying them the minimum next April is another way to cut free-agent spending this winter. With Kirilloff and Rooker on board, the Twins could save a chunk of the money they're paying Donaldson by letting Cruz walk, moving Donaldson to DH, and trading Rosario to add more pieces to extend their window (how nice would he look DHing and platooning with Duvall on a one year deal in 2021???). McCormick probably allows the Astros to let Reddick walk and offer at least some of his money to Springer or Brantley.

you don't know his work habits. that's the point.
or do you? that's why i asked specific questions about his time in the film room (a standard you cited).
clearly he didn't spend much time "in the film room" because he could barely hit this season, right?

clv, there isn't a single "rule of thumb" of yours that i would ever take into consideration.

I would think a GM or his manager or team mates would, but I would not.
