Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Brantley would probably be second fiddle for a QO considering his age et al. I think it was MLBTrade Rumors or possibly the Houston newspaper that said he should expect somewhere around 2/25-30.

Did Brantley receive a QO from the Indians before signing with the Astros? If he did, the Astros can't offer him one. At least that's my understanding of the process.

Edit: The Indians did not give Brantley a qualifying offer, so the Astros have that option. I believe the Braves would lose their second-highest pick if they signed Brantley.

This really feels like an off season where the majority of players offered a QO would have a hard time turning it down. Mainly due to the unknowns from Covid. The exception is obviously Bauer. This might make teams shy away from offering though.

if Brantley is offered a QO worth ~$19M, i have to believe he's taking it.

Age will play heavy into decisions that Brantley would have to make. Take the QO for 1 year then what can you reasonably expect the next year at age 35? However, with Springer and Reddick being FA this year who knows. They may just resign him. Worth noting all the FA Astros will have next off season.

If the choice is between Cruz for 2 years vs Ozuna for 3 years, I think the answer is pretty obviously Ozuna. Cruz is only an option if he requires a single year.

That's just it (didn't explain clearly, my bad) - just get the feeling Ozuna's going to get 4 years. As you mentioned before you may have to deal with his defense for one more year, but I'd think everybody's relatively confident that the DH will be part of the next CBA even if the NL doesn't have it in 2021. If that turns out to be the case (and there's no DH in 2021), doesn't Brantley or Pederson on a 1 year deal become more attractive than 4 years for Ozuna? You could platoon either with Duvall next season to buy another full season to find out for sure what you have in Waters, putting you in position to bid on Bryant in 2022.

Reddick obviously won't garner a QO, but I am really curious as to what his market will be like. He may be a decent LHH OF guy dependent on what he's looking for in AAV/Years.

If the DH stays I’d call the Red Sox on JD. They really don’t want or need him so I’d think they’d kick in some decent cash. He’s a huge bat as well.

Might not be a bad move if they can get Sox to take on Ender since JBJ will likely to move on.

The Sox would probably take him back to since they can absorb it. They’d still be shedding a lot of money. That would make JD cost us around 14 million next year. And they’d obviously have to eat some for 2021 which is the last year of JD’s deal.

Redick told his gramma (who used to cut my hair for years in Savannah, would talk to her all the time about Josh's rise through the minors with the Sox), he would never wantto play for the Braves because it's TOO CLOSE to home lol.

He liked being in Boston and Oakland, away from home.

I thought I remembered someone on the board relating that story, but I was worried it might have been an acid flashback. Thanks for putting my mind at ease.

I heard different.

Particularly when it would be a raise for Brantley.

Anyone not named Realmuto, Bauer or Springer not taking the QO is a mistake IMO. It's going to be rough out there.

If the teams cut the draft again losing that one pick is a much bigger factor in team decisions.

No doubt. And with Springer being a free agent they’ll be focused on bringing him back.

I saw a tweet from some Houston beat writer basically saying Springer is gone no matter what. Sounds like he doesn't want to be there anymore. The ownership said they were hopeful to extend him before the season but he has no desire to talk about any extension or new contract with Houston.

Springer is a New Englander, so if he heads back towards home, he ends up in NY or Boston. Possible luxury tax issues for the Yankees and Red Sox, which would mean they would likely have to unload a high-priced guy to make it happen.
