No, it’s at most a catalyst. If going to SCOTUS is considered a battle in a war, then you must agree with my assumption that there wouldn’t be a war in the first place, and it’d be some sort of diplomatic dispute.

I’m actually curious as to what would happen today if portions of the country attempted to secede. Would we let them? Would we fight an actual war over it? Has the economy evolved enough since the Civil War that the nation would be fine without some of the states? There are just so many fascinating questions. My best guess is it’d be similar to Brexit, where we’d just allow the autonomy and fight over what it means.

I wish someone would try it to find out. Either Texas first, followed by the rest of the Gulf Coast states, or California followed by the rest of the left coast. Then see where it goes from there.
