Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

I dont see them signing JT but if the DH came into play, you could basically rotate JT and TDA in the DH/C spot every 2 days to keep both fresh.

If this is more than just a basic check-in, I'm guessing the Braves would rotate TD and JT as catcher/DH.

Acuna RF - Freeman 1B - J.T. Realmuto C/DH - d'Arnaud DH/C - Albies 2B - Swanson SS - Riley 3B - ? LF - Pache CF is absurd no matter who they put at LF.

So weird, though. It's likely just them checking in on him.

C'mon man.

Acuna RF - Pache CF - Riley LF
Freeman 3B - Swanson SS - Ozzie 2B - JTR/TDA 1B
JTR/TDA C

:-)

I doubt it happens but signing JTR would fix the revolving catcher situation in Atlanta. Biggest payoff might well be that it would then free up 2 pretty good trade chips in Contreras and Langoliers.

Only thing i'll say with Realmuto is... There isnt a ton of big salaries on the Braves books. Even if they pay Freeman. Acuna/Albies deals are such bonkers, it allows AA to make a big move or two. But he's typically the 1-year special kinda GM. But maybe he sees an opening for Realmuto. My guess is this to just drive up the price, but if AA can get Realmuto, you figure out the rest later on.

I mean, he's the most valuable player available so I'm not against it. You get the best available and go with it but damn that'd be a surprise.

Realmuto may be looking for the extra year ala Josh Donaldson where Anthopoulos just won't go. But if they made the AAV a little sweeter on a four-year deal, maybe Realmuto would go for it. He's in that dicey age category where the extra year means a lot.

we know that AA was heavily involved in the trade market for realmuto.

What if he wants to play for a winner? 4/100 ?

If we think there is a DH it makes some sense. Probably makes it more likely that Realmuto is good in age 34, 35, etc seasons.

Like others said, it frees up a big trade trip in our system. Plus when you replace TDA with a Contreras next year, then you have some savings.

I don't see it happening. I'm not sure of a single rumor during the AA period that ever came to pass.

With TDA a FA after the season this makes a little more sense. You can have Contreras on the roster as a third catcher, or let him go to AAA for a full season and bring him up next season

Bowman broke the Braves interest in Morton a few days before we signed him

I'd rather just get Ozuna back but just hope AA adds "someone" capable who can hit or two. Realmuto would be a stunner though.

Rosters are going back to 25-26 next year, so i dont think you can carry 3 catchers.

If we had both those guys I'd hope our catchers are in the minors playing every day.

I do think if there is a DH that we carry 3 catchers. Snit just didn't sub much. You could put AJax on the roster so you could have the backup catcher available to pinch hit. THat said, if TDA and realmuto alternate between DH and C, then you probably don't need 3 catchers b/c you aren't pinch hitting with a catcher.

Based on last year with the DH, I'd have a back up SS and then teh best PH I could find. That would be it. Acuna gives you a back up CF if you need one in a pinch.

Same but we don't know what Ozuna is actually commanding nor do we know what Realmuto will take, only what's been reported.

If they were to get JTR, my guess is they'd go with a LHH in LF....Maybe Pederson?

The guess from the guys on XM was that if AA were to sign Realmuto, d'Arnaud would be traded for a LF. It does seem really odd, but if his rumored asking price ($23 million AAV) is right, that would be a $15 million payroll hit if you traded d'Arnaud away. If you hold onto both C prospects, they could handle the position defensively (or potentially become trade chips) and if you want you could shift Realmuto to DH in a couple years.

Ozuna and Rosario would cost you roughly $23 million - if you moved d'Arnaud and signed Realmuto and Rosario, you'd be spending roughly $20 million. The "extra" $3 million could go towards a platoon partner for Rosario, another utility IF, or Melancon or another pen arm.
