Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

If Puig is the bat AA adds, that's a pretty dissapointing offseason, and makes the Smyly deal look really bad even if he has a great year. No reason AA should be shopping at the clearance rack.

I think AA views Smyly as a playoff bullpen piece once we go to a three or four man rotation. So, he felt like he was killing two birds with one stone.

What big bat is left besides Ozuna? Being that many reporters are saying the Braves signing him back is unlikely...who’s left that could make a difference behind Freddie? Not many...unless a trade happens and that would probably need to include Ender for us to take on much salary.

Outside of Ozuna, there are no other big bats....Pederson, Duvall, Puig, Rosario are your options. If you go the trade route, Bryant makes the most sense, but Bowman is adamant we are not interested in him.

Was just looking into Jason Heyward. thinking if we trade Ender, maybe it would make sense....but then I saw his contract....how the hell is he owed $72.5M over the next 3 season?!? Enjoy Chicago Jason.

You’re also forgetting Justin Turner... also Bowman is probably adamant about Bryant because he’s really not a big bat anymore. He’s only a big name... big production is gone as is clearly evidenced by his statcast data and peripherals over the last couple years.

Guys it was rumored last year that Brantley didn’t want to come to Atlanta... if that was true then it would be the same thing this year... so it really doesn’t matter what his deal was because we weren’t getting him anyways.

Bryant is no Ozuna. He’s making a lot this year and there is no way to know if he rebounds. He could end up being not much better than Riley. Heyward’s contract was backloaded if I remember right.

Puig-Perderson/Duvall would be a good Platoon.

I just can’t see us spending that much on starting pitching and not having the money for other upgrades. It doesn’t make any sense.

We have a good catcher and great depth in the minors....????

If this is more than just a basic check-in, I'm guessing the Braves would rotate TD and JT as catcher/DH.

Acuna RF - Freeman 1B - J.T. Realmuto C/DH - d'Arnaud DH/C - Albies 2B - Swanson SS - Riley 3B - ? LF - Pache CF is absurd no matter who they put at LF.

So weird, though. It's likely just them checking in on him.

If they were to get JTR, my guess is they'd go with a LHH in LF....Maybe Pederson?

“Checking in”....would you be willing to take a one year $25 million contract?

JTR wants a massive contract, cant see AA being in on him. Phillies are offering 5 years, 110 million+, AA isnt beating that.

Just because he wants it doesn’t mean he will get it. We also don’t really know if the Phillies have offered that.

Has JT played anywhere besides catcher ? He’s getting to the age, that he might want to save his legs some. He is way faster than a normal catcher...I wonder if he could play the outfield any?

AA doesnt leak anything so im not sure how true that even is. Probably to get Philly to up their offer.

It would be contingent on the DH being in play in the NL, but Realmuto makes a lot of sense for the Braves if it is. There are some teams that still lean toward the classic DH who is in that position most every day, but other teams rotate guys in and out of the DH role. Anthopoulos may prefer the latter approach.

I think he could play LF if worse came to worse.

Agreed. One thing i've learned from AA is you never know what he is going to do....we have an obvious need in LF or 3B. So what happens? He makes a JTR type move....

If the DH is in the NL, it makes all the sense in the world.
