Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

If the Twins bring Cruz back (which looks like a foregone conclusion at this point), I wonder just how much it would hurt to pry Luis Arraez from them as Camargo's replacement.

Dude can flat-out hit, and would pair with Shewmake moving forward to give you a really strong IF bench.

With a trade for a 3B bat looking less and less likely, make deals for Gallo and Araez and sign Ozuna expecting the DH.

When we get done with the Ramirez chatter the latest according to CBS sports shows Braves interest in Grichuk and Gurriel..

Gurriel is obviously the better player. Grichuk has always been intriguing. Either would fit to some extent. Captain Obvious says it would all depend on price.

Or we are going to sign some fringe players like Puig and just hope TDA has another career year and Riley continues to improve and pray no one gets hurt.

Why would the Jays trade Gurriel?

Why would the Braves want Grichuk when Duvall is sitting there for peanuts?

Grichuk makes no sense for this roster, but if the Jays are looking to swap Gurriel for pitching there might be a match with the Braves centered around someone like Wright.

FIFY.

Jays are going to have to eat a lot of money to get someone to take Grichuk off their hands.

Apparently the Jays are behind the latest rumors. Might have something to do with the fact that they only have roster space for 25/26 like every other team and after signing Springer there are 6 make that SIX occupants who play the OF.

I doubt Arreaz is going anywhere. Twins have traditionally liked a supersub and have generally preferred that guy to be a bat-first guy. Simmons is on a one-year deal, which the Twins probably view as being a seat-warmer for Royce Lewis. Jorge Polanco's stats took a dip last season after he really showed up big in 2019. Twins are probably going to try to determine which was the blip: 2019 or everything that came before and after 2019. Polanco is moving off SS (where he's okay, but not great) to 2B. From my vantage point, the guy the Twins will likely move after 2021 is Polanco.

Edit my earlier comment, I had no idea Grichuk's contract was so bad. He isn't a fit anywhere in baseball unless the Jays send a considerable amount of cash (in American dollars) along with him.

MLB owners proposed new offer. 154 game season. Season delayed 1 month. Players to get all money, not prorated. Expanded playoffs, universal DH.

Basically everything everyone was asking for

MLBPA taking the weekend to consider

I usually side with the players, but I don't see a need to haggle here. If they get the DH off the table now, that issue is settled (one would think) for the next labor agreement. Expansion by 2025 (or thereabouts and you have 8 4-team divisions. Toss in a couple of wild cards and you have your expanded playoffs.

No matter what the deal ends up being, it’s probably safe to assume the DH is in place. All they are haggling over now is how to split the extra postseason cash and when to start the season.

There is no longer any reason for the Cruz and Ozuna markets to be in doubt. They should sign soon.
