Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Cruz back to the Twins on a 1 year deal 13 million

Now we can officially move from thinking about being concerned to getting a little concerned. One of the three realistic FA options to fill the JD/Ozuna void has signed for a very affordable rate.

If the Dodgers get Turner for 2/25 we can move to being moderately concerned.

If someone else gets Ozuna for 1/20 we can move to being very concerned.

I think if the Dodgers sign Turner we should begin to get very concerned. And if anyone signs Ozuna we should get beyond concerned. If both options are gone and our remaining two choices are either do nothing or overpay for someone then we're not going to like whichever choice AA makes. Teams already ask us for our studs in every trade scenario due to our depth. Now if they know we have no more options in free agency their asking price will be even greater. Not having a legitimate free agent option would be disastrously bad. Really not sure where AA goes if both Turner and Ozuna are gone. Thankfully they're both still available so we just patiently and nervously wait.

And if those guys are gone...make a trade. We HAVE to make a trade if we do not sign a bat though (if it is a money problem). I don’t want to get in a trade deadline pinch and REALLY have to pay thru the nose, because we have no choice.

That was always likely, and without the DH becoming official probably kept us from being real Cruz suitors.

What does Ozuna get now? 3/54?

If it was 3/54, I would sign him today. I am still holding out that a Ramirez or Chapman type blockbuster is coming (kind of like the JD trade in Toronto when AA was there). I think he is nightly fighting what he thinks is right (big trade) and what the Dodgers told him was right. He is having very restless sleep fighting with himself.

Still having a hard time understanding what type of market even exists for Ozuna at this point. What contenders have a need for him and also have money to spend?

Hope we aren't bidding against ourselves. Have to figure the low point on AAV is the $18 mil he made last year. Just make it 3 years and get this done.

If there is no DH, Ozuna's defensive replacement is .... Inciarte? Or do you still sign someone like Duvall?

If there is no DH and you add Ozuna, do you need a LH 3B?

Is there a word for the irrational fear that your team is about to sign Puig and call it the needed big bat? I mean, uh, it IS irrational, uh, right?

This was probably always the calculus. There aren’t enough multi year deals for every one of the impact bats, so AA is waiting for one of them to accept a 1-2 year deal.

Puig having reverse splits is a plus considering the vast majority of pitchers are RH. So there's that I suppose.

The remaining FAs that have some sort of fit for us, imo, are:

OF:

Ozuna
Jackie Bradley Jr.
Ryan Braun
Yasiel Puig
Adam Duvall
Jay Bruce
Nomar Mazara
Kevin Pillar

3b:

Justin Turner
Jedd Gyorko
Asdrubal Cabrera

Take away Ozuna and Turner, and that is a very lackluster list.

Given that list, give me Ozuna and Cabrera and I would find that acceptable.
