Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Acuna is trending on Twitter with how great his deal, coupled with Albies deal is, compared to the Padres signing Tatis. We’ll be paying the 2 of them less then they’ll pay him.

Since when did the Padres become a big market team that can spend at will? They have almost 600 million invested at SS and 3rd. That’s insane.

Preller is a strange dude.

I'm interested in the structure.

How can San Diego sustain this. They've never given any indication they could.

A lot of money coming off the books by the time they'll likely be paying him big money. I assume Tatis will make less than 10 million the next couple of seasons. Hosmer, Darvish, and Myers will be gone by 2023. That's 66 million right there.

He likely doesn't get huge money until the years he would of been a free agent. Pretty standard.

I guess it should be asked. Does he deserve that kind of money already. He hasn’t even played a full season. He feels like a safe bet but man that is a lot of cheese to gamble.

Just shows you how much money teams make.
Owners have different goals.
Some just want a team to show off and brag about, others look at the bottom line.
Of course all this will come back to haunt them in the future most likely but they have an owner that pretty clearly wants to win regardless of the future.
Kinda like when we had Ted.

Tatis is super talented but this deal is just absurd. The dude has like 580 total at-bats at the MLB level. This is all about the revenue he will bring in as the "face of baseball," which is also silly.

Haven’t we all learned yet that AA knows what he’s doing?

He has plans A-ZZ.

Maybe he’s on plan L right now but he has earned the benefit of the doubt at this point that whatever team will be put on the field will be a World Series team. Maybe that team won’t materialize till July but as of today we are better than last year and that was good enough to be one of the best in baseball as is.

That's a ton of money for Tatis but could very well be a bargain in 4 years. Does make Acuna's deal look like chump change but could very well see AA do what the Astros did with Altuve and give him more money when the time arises. Albies too.

Why are we giving AA a pass or benefit of the doubt? He didn’t build this team. The core was in place for him to add around the edges and not screw anything up. Do I think he has one a good job. Yes. Am I giving him a pass. No.

The AAV of the deal is like 24m, so if they've structured it as usual they've not gotten much of a discount on the years they bought. Which makes it a very strange risk calculation.

He's 22 years old, has one season of PA under his belt, and was widely expected to outgrow SS in some quarters. A shoulder injury, an achilles, a predilection towards buffets and you've flushed 14 years of roster flexibility down the drain in a small market.

I don't get why you make that call until you actually have to.

I'd almost respect the deal more if they were paying him 24m a year flat. If they'd just flushed two years of flexibility down the drain to have 12 years of it later. An owner could just decide to eat those dollars in the short term.

Preller has done so many odd things, I think he makes moves just to get himself in the news.
