We are in the toughest division in baseball

from what I've seen.

The presumed laggard may very well win the division. I frankly love the Marlins right now.

As a matter of fact, I have them as my pick to represent the National League in the World Series. Maybe even win it.

Bovada has them at +8000 to win the World Series.

What say you?

Is this a troll post? The Marlins aren’t making the playoffs, much less winning the division, much less going to the World Series. The Marlins weren’t even a good team last year.

Not a troll post.

They will have a monster rotation.

I wouldn't trade Sandy, Sixto, Pablo Lopez, and Trevor Rogers right now for any other pitching foursome in baseball- my beloved Braves included.

Do you post stuff just to get as reaction? There is a reason guys are so hard on you.

The Marlins suck. And the Dodgers have 3 starters better than the Marlins best starter. And it could easily be 4 too.

Should be a good race. Marlins should be improved, but let's remember that last year's 60-game season might have produced more than a few mirages. Can't bet on young pitching, but you can't bet against it either. I don't think the Marlins' offense is that great and that's where they'll fall down in my estimation.

I can see the Braves finishing anywhere between first and fourth. Teams are fairly evenly matched talent-wise, so (in my best Captain Obvious voice), it's going to boil down to who plays the best.

This “Marlins might be sneaky good” has popped up in “bold predictions” articles, so it’s not like this is a particularly unique take. In fact: https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/10-bold-predictions-for-michael-simione/

Folks have been dreaming on teams with talented young arms since forever, and never seem to learn just how volatile those arms typically are. The Marlins are now that team based on 2020 xwOBA values for their young arms:

Sixto - .268
Lopez - .274
Rodgers - .289
Alcantara - .310

Problem with this narrative is:

Anderson - .242
Fried - .259
Smyly - .293
Morton - .307
Soroka - also good

Then consider the gigantic gap between the position players for the Braves and Marlins, and the overall result isn’t particularly close.

Sure, teams over perform and underperform every year, but I’m not too concerned about the Marlins riding a young pitching staff to glory.

Unfortunately you can't put the Marlins in this category by themselves, just about every team in baseball fits - there's a pretty legitimate argument to be made that Fried, Morton, Soroka, or Anderson wouldn't be better than the #4 or #5 guy in the rotation if they were Dodgers' property either.

The Marlins young arms are worth being pretty excited about, but that's just not enough to make them competitive at the top of this particular division - put them in the NL Central and it could be a different story altogether.

Then you're a fool. They might not even be the 3rd best foursome in the NL East alone, much less all of baseball.

Braves SPs are projected for 12-13 wins. Marlins SPs are projected for 10-11 wins. Short term I almost certainly take the Braves SPs, and I don’t even think twice.

The Marlins SPs are all young, but Soroka, Fried and Anderson also have many years of control. Long term it’s more of a valid debate, but I still think I’d prefer the young known quantities in the Braves rotation. I could understand someone preferring the younger upside rotation long term though, especially if they are team like the Marlins who aren’t in their contention window yet.
