With Freeman signed, who should Wren try too extend next?

Simmons should be the next chip to fall our way. Best glove in the game at his position and a bat that could get better. Decent speed and oh yeah his arm is kinda good too.

Simmons should be the priority now. Elite defense with a mediocre bat should come at a relative bargain. His defensive skills are also the least likely tool to deteriorate before he turns 30.

Wren probably offered Heyward a large deal, and he turned it down. Either Heyward breaks out this year and prices himself out of Atlanta after 2015, or he breaks down again and proves he isn't worth a longterm commitment. Both scenarios point to the end of the Jason Heyward era.

I wouldnt say that but odds are he leaves.

They actually tried to do a multi-year deal but it was complicated.

With Freeman signed, maybe he stays, i'd say 30-70 he stays but its not a done deal he is done. If he has a good year, i think they'll try to sign him longterm, if he accepts, thats a different story.

In the press conference officially announcing the Freeman signing just now, Wren stated, very gently, that the Braves wanted to extend a player that was already established so the player wouldn't feel the need to live up to the contract (the implication being that Freddie is being paid for how he's played, whereas a payout to Jason would put additional pressure on him). I don't know if that's how the FO actually feels, but his response was interesting to me.

#Braves Wren said revenue increases at Cobb Co. ballpark will allow team to be "more competitive" and keep many of its homegrown players.

That's all fine and dandy. We aren't winning a world series unless Frank can actually sign a productive free agent for once.

Hmm. I'm curious to see just how much of a revenue increase the new Cobb County ballpark will have.

Hopefully that is the case. I really want to see the Braves eventually extend Heyward, Simmons, and Teheran.

Also on Hot Stove with Freeman signed long term, heard #Braves want to try to do pre-arb extended deals with Simmons/Teheran.

MLB Trade Rumors discusses Braves interested in extending Simmons + Teheran

Simmons currently has one year, 125 days of Major League service time under his belt. Extensions for shortstops with between one and two years of service time are a rarity, though Troy Tulowitzki inked a six-year, $31MM contract with one year, 33 days of service. Simmons is cut from a different cloth than Tulowitzki, but that contract is also six years old. Recent extensions for defensive-minded shortstops who signed with two to three years of service time include Alcides Escobar (four years, $10.5MM) and Elvis Andrus (three years, $14.4MM). Simmons is regarded as a superior defender to both and has more power than either of his slick fielding peers, and neither was a Super Two player. As such, his remaining years of team control figure to come at a higher price than either Andrus or Escobar, especially considering that each of those contracts is two years old.

Shifting to Teheran, the right-hander currently has one year, 62 days of service time. There's a much larger sample of historical context when looking at his case, as starters Martin Perez, Wade Davis, Brett Anderson, James Shields and Cory Luebke have all signed four-year deals in the $12MM range with multiple club options at similar junctures of their careers. Madison Bumgarner and Ricky Romero each netted more than $30MM over a five-year span, but they projected as potential Super Two players and each had experienced more success by that point in their careers.

Simmons is our next most important player, but we probably don't have to worry about him until the 2015-2016 offseason. Minor might be the guy to figure out next.

If the Braves can lock down Andrelton now for a decent price it could be an absolute coup for the team. I believe 2014 is going to be a turning point for him offensively, supposing the Braves don't decide to experiment with him at lead-off again.

This team will not stay competitive if the payroll stays at 100 million.

Bingo.

I think the front office and MAYBE ownership is realizing that now this year with the massive amounts of money being thrown out to free agents around the league.

I think the FO realizes this. They have acknowledged their poor TV contract and mentioned the new stadium and the area around it as helping limit the damage it is causing.

Being a mediocre person is what you do best. You are a worthless person.

Keith Law (the pundit) is certainly a mediocre person. He's also the bastard of Buster Olney.

Not true, we can, would just have to go super cheap at a lot of spots, mainly pitching.
