Braves sign Freeman to 8 year 135M deal! *Updated to 135m*

Wouldnt say a bargain but if they waited another year, it would of cost more.

It's about market value these days.

I feel like this is a direct contradiction. If it would have cost a lot more in a year, doesn't that mean that down the line $22MM is a bargain?

Technically, yes, but its not like its a Longoria/Cutch/Goldy extension.

Before Longo got his huge deal.

It's not a bargain in the sense that it's market value for what Freeman would likely get today as a FA. However 3 years the market value is likely going to be a lot higher. Will be interesting to see what similar players will get that off season.

The Giants went nuts on the Pence and Lincecum deals. Those two deals in turn set the tone for the early free agent deals this off-season. Now things are coming back to earth. The teams that waited will turn out to be the winners this off-season. There are going to be some club-friendly signings with the remaining group of free agents.

Some teams are going to get some pretty good deals with Arroyo and Jimenez. The Brewers got a solid deal with Garza.

I think what should also be taken into consideration is 1st base is a position that is in the midst of a change. Todd Helton just retired. Joey Votto, Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, Adrian Gonzalez, Mark Teixeira, Albert Pujols, Paul Konerko, Edwin Encarnacion, James Loney are all on the wrong side of 30 and a lot closer to retirement than they are to their prime years. There's not a lot of good young up and coming 1st basemen right now. Freddie Freeman, Brandon Belt, Anthony Rizzo, Paul Goldschmidt. Probably a couple of more I'm forgetting. 2 or 3 years from now Freddie Freeman will be one of the top 5 best 1st basemen in the majors.

Yeah...there was a pretty good article up about the lack of young 1st base talent out there or coming as a good reason to do this contract.

Another good point. And of that last group right now Freeman would be the 2nd best player.

First base though is a position to which players transition from other positions as they age. Napoli moved there full-time last season. Mauer is moving there this season. Posey will too at some point. Maybe McCann.

You're correct about that. But Mauer is another one of the over 30 club. Posey on the only hand is blocked in SF by Brandon Belt. Although the Giants would move Belt in a heartbeat to allow Posey to play 1B everyday when it comes time for that. Brian McCann isn't nearly athletic enough to play 1B.

Even still...none of those guys would be available for the Braves.

Yep. Braves had to pay to keep Freeman. The last thing we needed to do was go through another decade of having a new 1st baseman every year. Do we really want to go back to the days of Wally Joyner, Matt Franco, Julio Franco, Ken Caminit, Rico Brogna, B.J. Surhoff, Robert Fick, Scott Thorman, Craig Wilson, Adam LaRoche, Mark Teixeira, Casey Kotchman. Did I leave anyone out? No. I like knowing that the Braves don't have to worry about 1st base for a long, long time. We haven't had that since we had Fred McGriff and Andres Galarraga.

I see what you're saying but you do realize that locking him up just moves the revolving door to another position. We had Chipper locked up with big $ and had a hole at first for years. Now Chipper retires and we give the money to Freeman. First base is locked down but now the hole may move to another position since we may not have the cash to fix another problem. Not saying third is a problem but what if Chris Johnson regresses and we spend the better part of the next decade trying to find a permanent third baseman?

Clearly you haven't been here much. Basically nobody on the Braves can or will regress this season.

If Chris Johnson regresses to what he did in 2012 he would still be a solid hitter.

I don't understand this logic...the Braves shouldn't lock up someone they already have because they may not be able to find someone to play another position? Where is the logic in that?

Fielder, Votto, AGon are still in their primes.

You should do some research

Ok.

I wouldnt say either on the wrong side of 30, hell, Prince hasnt even turned 30 yet.

Votto is just 30-31, and arguably the best 1B in baseball still with plenty of good baseball left.

AGon could be very productive for another 4-5 years, a swing like his will be fine for awhile.

There?

Could be productive and still in prime are 2 different things.

Fielder is fat. Super fat. He's been fat for longer than he's been in pro baseball. Fat people break down faster, his knees will go faster, his back will go faster, etc. Big 1B generally don't age well and start to fall off at around 30. FIelder is heading into his 30s and his numbers have been slipping from his peak. His iso the last 3 years has gone from .267 to .215 to .178. For a guy who makes his money as a power hitter that's not a good trend.

Votto who knows with him, he's kinda small at 6'2 220. He may age pretty well. Helton was similar size and he didn't have a horrific aging curve.

A-Gon has already regressed steeply. His peak was 140-155 wRC+ last 2 years have been 116 and 124 and that's in a stacked lineup, not the weak ones like in SD.
