CLASS A

Game One
Augusta 11, Myrtle Beach 3 (4th)

SP: Munoz 4 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Bunnell 1-3, 2B, RBI

As big of a fan as I am of the 2019 draft, it would be nice to see Paolini do anything this year to justify his draft position (5th round) and bonus (180% over slot). I know everyone ragged on the Beau Philip pick, but he at least signed well-under slot, seems to be a good defensive SS, and (albeit at 22) has shown a bit more at A+ this year than Paolini has at A (albeit at only 20).

Thus far, Paolini seems like a much more egregiously-picked guy than Philip, and certainly not the cold-weather diamond-in-the-rough it was floated he might be.

Pache 3-5, 2 hr

An example of why it's dangerous to scout the boxscores.

Parsons (Memphis' SP) had NOTHING. Was touching 91-92 (batting practice FBs these days). He made Pache and Waters both look really bad in their first ABs, chasing what they're known to chase (high FBs for Waters and breaking balls in the dirt for Pache). Arcia's double should have been caught, the 2B should have made the play on Kipnis' single (wasn't hit very hard, bounced off his leg), then the shot Camargo hit off him in the 1st was destroyed - probably more than 430 feet.

Waters flailed away again in his second AB, and Pache got jammed with an 89 mph FB that hit the top of the wall in LF and bounced over - it was definitely a wall-scraper.

I got bored while watching Roark pitch, so I stopped watching after the 4th.

You can't see it all in a couple ABs, but if we think Pache and Ender have been disappointingly "easy outs" for opposing Pitchers, Drew will take that to another level.

Agree with you 100%. Paolini was a late-riser after flying under the radar and not being a big showcase guy during his high school years. Scouts in all sports fall in love with guys and it's my guess that the Braves' NE scout was like a dog with a bone on Paolini. Drafting him is one thing. Going over slot to sign him is another. Both he and Philip strike out way too much for their power profile. The one place where I am going to give all of these guys (for all teams) a break is that not having the opportunity to play competitvely in 2020 (especially for guys like Paolini who would have likely been with Danville in short-season ball) really messed with their development.

I'm gonna take 2 HRs in a game as a positive. You can paint it negative if you want

Didn't really look like a cheap one. 2nd one was blasted

Yeah..we need positives and it's tough to remember these guys didn't get a development year last year. That second Pache blast was nice. Even liked the way he adjusted his hands on the first one. Here's hoping he and Waters continue to grow....(Watching the Atlanta OF...yuck).

Not many are talking about the missing year and even though Pache and a few other guys were at the alternate site as part of the 60-man roster, that wasn't game competition (regardless of what one thinks of scrimmages, they are just scrimmages). I'm a bit of a lone wolf on promotion strategy as someone who is on the extremely cautious side, but I think that lack of a season last year for most of the Braves' minor league players has to be considered when looking at performance (or lack thereof) this season.

Pache isn't the first guy who had to re-visit the minor leagues after a rough start at the major league level. Here's hoping the trip back to AAA has built his confidence back. The thing I saw in him earlier this season while in Atlanta is that he had this "I really don't belong here" vibe going on. That just kills any chance at success.

Spot on. I've never seen him look like that. I stated before in rookie ball he looked like that..UNTIL..the instructions he was receiving clicked. Complete opposite of Derian Cruz. I know I always post about Pache but that's my dude. Either way it's good to see any signs of confidence and the at bats in AAA may prove to be invaluable in the long run...

Might be challenging to calculate, since he spent time on the MLB DL this year, and also on the MLB roster last year in the truncated season. But anyone have any idea how long we need to leave Pache down to gain the extra year of control back?

Nobody's painting anything as a "negative" simply pointing out that you need context.

The second one was "blasted" - that's why they call those things HIGHLIGHTS. Scouting those doesn't tell you much either unfortunately. Miguel Sano hits absolute bombs (and you always see them on SportsCenter and Baseball Tonight), but he's also striking out 38% of the time while hitting .180 with a .277 OBP and producing a 95 wRC+. Unlike Pache, he's not going to provide Gold Glove defense.

12:18 Will Michael Harris be a top 100 guy when you guys update next week?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:18 No, plate discipline has beenkinda scary

No idea where he's getting this info, but it's something folks around here have noted with his current BB rate. Definitely worth following, and might prevent him from being promoted quickly.

It's very small at 3.3%. He did have a better rate in A ball, 9.7%. His k rate is way down this year though to 20.0%.

I hope they are going by more than two-dimensional stats in making that judgement, but I'm all for being overly cautious with Harris. He was a high school draftee in 2019, skipped over Advanced Rookie to go straight to Low A where he didn't exactly shine in less than 100 ABs. He was at the alternate site last year, but that doesn't count much for me (and I realize I may be in the minority). There was lots of buzz during spring training and he is a good prospect, but given that last season was just such a mess I hope they just let him get his feet under him before moving him up the chain.

I'm all for getting carried away... he's gonna be the lh Acuna we were promised.

Or maybe drew waters with less Ks

Sure—you'd hope there's more to that evaluation than just looking at his abysmally-low bb-rate, considering he's hitting everything (with pretty solid power, as well) and not striking out too much. With some OF prospects higher up in the system, they can afford to be patient with Harris regardless, however, so there's no harm in seeing if A+ pitchers stop throwing him anything hittable and he responds by starting to take his walks.
