Second Guessers Special: Unfilled Off-Season Wish List

Now we know why Wren didn't upgrade externally this offseason.

It wasn't like he had to find any starting position players.

For everyone who thought BJ was going to be a 4th OFer you were wrong. Uggla was the only one that might be traded but kind of hard to trade a guy who has 26 mill left on his deal and can't hit.

Starting pitching was the ONLY spot Wren could spend money. He was happy with what he had and got a guy in Floyd who might be able to come in and give the braves an very good 100+ innings.

Not sure what some people wanted Wren to do. I wanted a better SP then Floyd but that didn't happen. Just didn't want to spend the money or years on what a SP would have took.

LOL having Mike Trout would make it different, huh?

How did having Mike Trout work out for the Angels the last two years?

We are a much better team than Mike Trout's team because of how much depth and young talent we have emerging.

We have a lot of young talent. So much right now. I can't believe people can even complain looking at all the young guys we have. Why do some here seem to think one of young players can't emerge. They don't even think they can emerge in a playoff series, much less a whole season. Why is that though? Honestly, why can't you look at the positives this team has right now? Look at the seasons the Red Sox got out of some of their guys last year. There is no reason the Braves can't have things go their way.

And to those who harp on the "Braves aren't a winning organization" thing, I find that to be such a lame argument. The reality is, franchises go through cold streaks. This team is different from last year's team, and is certainly different from the team of 5 years ago. We have a good crop of young talent, likely enter the season with yet again the youngest lineup in the league (even with a lot of the same guys in it), and due to some of the talent we have and the steps forward they took last year. It was Minor's 2nd full season and he took a big step forward. Teheran looked great. It's not like his FIP was 4.5 and he got lucky. He's 23. A lot of teams would like to be in our position right now. I think there's a lot of reason for optimism, and I wouldn't say I'm always optimistic about my sports.

Who said the Braves were not a good team? I certainly didn't. I was just making the point that our window for a winning a WS with this team was small given our payroll constraints and that I would rather push in my chips and go for it while we had this opportunity.

Obviously these recent extensions have changed some things. Having Kimbrell and Julio at below market deals for the next several yrs gives us some financial flexibility I did not think we would otherwise have.

Well then you did not fully understand the arguments many people were making at the time, because it featured the idea that Wren wanted to keep our young guys around and needed some money to do so.

With these extensions, its pretty clear payroll is going up.

Not at a Yankees/Dodgers/Phillies level but in the 110-120 million range.

I don't think most would have predicted the team friendly deals that were signed lately. I also, don't see how Price would have necessarily hindered our ability to resign other players either, unless Wren decided to shell out a ton of money to keep him long term. But again, obviously this changes some things.

Still, given how many of our own players we have failed to resign or traded away due to money issues over the last 5-10 years, I'd say it was pretty fair to have been skeptical of those comments.

I doubt they would of broke the farm for 2 years of Price.

We didnt need to go for it now, again, the playoffs are a crapshoot.

I think Wren figured out that of all the times hudson made the playoffs his team never advanced past the first round. Wren let the bad luck charm leave now we win the world series. If wedo advance and the giants dont I want to see one of those posters a cards fan made of pujols watching the world series on tv weating an angels uniform.

I still regret having Uggla not being moved but now with Baily extending brings some thoughts up.

Did Wren and Jockety ACTUALLY have any discussion about a Phillips Uggla swap
Who else would like to see Simmons and Phillips up the middle?
I believe I would rather make that trade now and gamble on Phillips still having value in 2016 than I would like to keep Uggla or eat his salary at some time.

Uhh, the Reds arent dumb.

It wouldnt be Uggla/BP straight up, we'd have to add a few prospects but yes i would of done that depending who else we had to move.

I'm glad the Braves didn't take on Brandon Phillips and his overblown contract. Brandon Phillies, aside from his defense, is one of the most overrated players in baseball. Thankfully Wren is much smarter than that.
