He's not just supposed to be a pretty good defender... he's supposed to be an elite defender. I'll temper my expectations, though... we remember Bethancourt... still the bat has been almost as good as Adley Rutschman in their first full pro year (Shea 151 wRC+ with better power and a little less luck, Adley 159 wRC+ with better contact/hitting and a little more luck). Could end up being a remarkable catcher draft year. Shea needs to strike out less, but he's walking at a nice clip (11.6%)

Bethancourt never really was known for having a bat but was good defensively. Having 2 catchers like SL and Contreras is a nice problem to have. It makes TD leaving after this year a lot easier.

I wasn't referring to Bethancourt's bat... you were talking about his defense... my point was Bethancourt was supposed to be elite defensively and he kinda sucked defensively when he got to the majors. We always knew his bat sucked.

He's back stateside and is playing multiple positions for the Pirates' AAA Indianapolis team.

I don't know what Alan Rangel has done, but after getting shelled in his first few outings this season, he's put together a pretty solid last half of June. Striking out more than 12 per 9. He's been around for quite awhile (signed in 2015) and he's probably bought a house in Rome because he's spent the last three full seasons prior to this one there in Low-A and there again this year as part of the High-A team. I've never seen him on any prospect lists, which makes me think he's probably not destined for greatness, but I did notice his K-rate was way up this year. Curious to know how he's doing that.

It turned out all Bethancourt had was a big arm. When I look at his walk rate, I wonder if the Braves simply don't teach the kind of plate discipline necessary to succeed at higher levels or if the players are just unteachable on that subject. We all laugh about "The Rocket Wheeler School of Hitting" where lesson one was if it's not outside the batter's box, it's reachable, but I've seen too many guys come up through our system with little idea of what's a strike and what's a ball and who embrace the notion that it's okay to take a walk more than once a month.
