Trades/acquisitions

Bryant is going to be due something like 9 million after the trade deadline. Kimbrel will be something like 6-7 million. He does have a vesting option for next year based on games finished in 2020 and 2021. With last year having everything prorated I'm not going to depend to know how likely that is right now.

In the end I'm sure the Cubs care more about the players they get in return than the money they would be saving.

literately no reason to make moves to only compete this season

any and all moves should be moves that are for 2022 and 2023

Assuming Braves elect to become sellers to whatever degree, Morton would probably head the list of viable assets to trade. The likely hood he would accept a trade to anyone other than Tampa prompts the question, what would you expect in return from the Rays?

If he will only accept a trade to TB, that kills what value he has.

The ASG will be 7 weeks since ozuna's injury. I know he isn't gonna play, but isn't the first step to getting out the contract to get him off the IL?

We would get money off the books, so there's always that angle. I wouldn't expect much in return for him from the Rays--certainly not a Top 100 guys of which they have a few--but maybe take a flyer on someone like Josh Lowe.

I don't think we'll be able to take the division without Acuna, but obviously punting is a dangerous move imo. Last year, we had no fans, but this year, there's good attendance. If we punt now, attendance likely pays a big price. If that happens, payroll probably drops again. I think the smarter move is holding who we have and getting a couple rentals. Keep the casual fan interested enough to attend games... payroll next season is more valuable than josh Lowe imo

ETA... now I'm not saying trade off valuable prospects. You could get someone like a Duvall, maybe even marte, and a reliever. That actually may keep us in the division race till the end with TDA coming back and our pitching

Unpopular opinion:
We need a “mini” rebuild next year.

Last year we would have won it all had it not been for all the injuries to the rotation. Heck…we still should have won it all. We were the best team in baseball. The Braves seemed like they had all the pieces to make a extended run for years.

Fast forward a year. Soroka disaster, most of our relievers turn into pumpkins (except for Luke and the guys we didn’t sign back), Ozuna fiasco, Freddie might leave. This team within a few months is now a shell of what it was last year.

The bullpen needs completely rebuilt. Rotation will need help if Morton isn’t signed back (he’s a short term fix either way). The line-up is a absolute mess. Sure, there are guys coming up…but just like Riley and Pache…none of those rookies coming in should be expected to thrive. It takes a couple of years and you cannot count on them on a contender. It’s why Ozuna was (at the time) such a great signing.

It’s great news that AA has been so careful with our budget, because he will need EVERY penny to right this ship. I would do what I could to move Smith. He and Ozuna are the only guaranteed money on the books besides Acuna and Ozzie. Ozuna money will likely take care of itself at least for next year. That would only leave Ozzie and Acuna which together make 20 million. We do not have the farm to make trades to improve the roster anymore (without completely draining the farm). We possibly now need 30-40% of our roster turned over. It can be done. It will not be easy.

The plan should probably be to sell now. Unless AA is willing to add something like a Marte/Bryant cornerstone bat plus another Peralta type bat in the OF, there is no realistic way to compete without Acuna.

I have a feeling nothing about attendance is due to contention because this team isn’t exactly playing well this year. The attendance this year was due to opening up early and built up demand to see live sports. Therefor, I’m hoping the sell off doesn’t affect attendance much, either this year or what would have happened next year without the sell off.

If they sell, it has to be a real sale. Morton, Martin, Smith, Freeman and Swanson…all gone. Either do it right, or don’t do it at all.

Peralta should be cheap. Marte is a rental, so shouldn't be too bad. I hope AA attempts to go this route. We've basically been winning with pitching anyway.

This is why I'm torn - and probably what kept AA from sleeping last night. Regardless of any of the reasons behind his choice(s), attendance and the bottom line (substantially helped by a Battery that remains full of people until October) HAS TO carry a large amount of weight. At the end of the day, he has to make Liberty's shareholders happy - not the fans. While I agree there's likely no chance this team competes for any big prize without Acuna, we've seen stranger things happen than seriously wounded teams coming together and going on a run that gets them to the playoffs. The rest of the division has plenty of warts (as well as injury concerns), the team was starting to play better over the last couple weeks, and now they've had a big rallying cry to come together around dropped on them. A "see, we're not just Acuna and the 25 dwarves" attitude should be expected moving forward. If you can get them some help around the edges without giving up much and pieces coming back (d'Arnaud, Ynoa, and potentially Pache, Waters, and Contreras at some point), chasing down someone as inept as the Mutts have historically been certainly isn't out of the question - we've seen that movie before, and I think this team with just a minor amount of help and a little better luck (which is certainly due) is good enough to think that getting by the Gnats and Phillies isn't much of a concern - even without Ronald. Dealing with the other teams that are probably going to be playing in the postseason is an entirely different story though.

My knee-jerk reaction yesterday during the game and before the news was "AA needs to back away from any deals he was discussing at this point. Sit down with Freddie and lay everything on the line and make him an offer you can work with and put the how bad does he want to stay ball in his court. If he accepts, you've salvaged at least something to feel good about from this crazy year. Bring Waters, Pache, and Contreras up and let them continue to learn on the job. I'm through worrying about Waters' K-rate - he's still getting on base at a .350 clip with all the Ks. Everybody in Miami had the same concerns with Chisholm, and he's been fine. He's smoking hot right now, so maybe he stays that way for another week or so after the break and gets comfortable before the league adjusts to him."

Is that smart? Who knows? What we do know is that if AA doesn't go out and get a Bryant/Marte type is that the doing anything other than lucking into a one and done postseason series pressure is probably off at this point. The pressure for Waters, Pache, and Contreras to perform should be gone - calling them up is about getting their feet wet and getting them to learn to make adjustments at the MLB level. Unless you plan on leaving them all in AAA in 2022 as well you're going to have to let them compete against major league players. You've been given a window to prepare to make a run next season WITHOUT having to concern yourself with results for the next three months. If Pache/Waters/Contreras don't show that you can count on them for some level of acceptable production, you're going to need to be in the market for a LF and Catcher this winter anyway if you want to compete in 2022 even if you get Soroka and Acuna back.
