AA has to have an eye to 2022 with any trade and be confident that there won’t be a work stoppage bc giving up valuable pieces for a wasted 2022 would be terrible too. Tough spot to be in.

AA, if you wanna try, then you have to get a lf and 2 relievers now. That's all that's between us and 1st place imo

Can't believe they actually offered that - honestly thought things would start to change with Ng and Jeter in charge, apparently not.

I don’t see where he said that anywhere. Just that he hopes.

We’re not trading for Kimbrel, because demand is going to dictate a cost that the Braves won’t and shouldn’t be willing to pay.
 
If anything, if we or the Phillies catch the Mets in the next 10 days, I expect the Mets to fall all over themselves to trade for Kimbrel and Bryant.

What if we traded for Kimbrel but also traded Smith to offset salary and assets.

To whom?

Who on earth is dumb enough to want 2 years of Smith at $13 million per that wouldn't just go ahead and trade for Kimbrel. If you exercise Kimbrel's 2022 option he costs you $32 million for 2 years while Smith will cost you $27 million. (Full-season salaries - don't have time to figure the pro-rated numbers for this season, but the point is would you rather have Kimbrel in 2022 for $16 million or Smith in 2022 for $14 million and a chance to keep him in 2023 for another $12 million???)

The only teams trading for Closers with high salaries are legitimate contenders. Kimbrel's well worth the extra $5 million. Smith is the perfect example of why you don't give expensive, long-term contracts to anyone other than the absolute elite of the elite - Kimbrel/Hader/Chapman/Hendriks - and even those deals have periods where they look plenty questionable.
