Trades/acquisitions

The issue with not choosing a direction either way means that your team remains around a .500 team the rest of the way and you get a meh draft pick.

Agreed. The fence sitting GM now has a team that's on the fence. I know..shyt has happened but he put one of those nose strip bandages on a wound that needed gauze.

PLUS a NTC from today's GMs??? No way.

Think about it - even the number-crunchers here are leery of giving him Goldschmidt money. Everyone is so worried about declining production from players in their mid-30s that no one other than the richest franchises are willing to go there. Think about it - San Diego is DESPERATE to unload Hosmer's money because he isn't a .275/.350./500, 30+ HR guy. They've got $42 million tied up in Hosmer and Myers for 2022, and you can make the argument that the two of them should be platooning at 1B.

Those other GMs might give Freddie that kind of money in the hopes that they win it all while he's still an MVP candidate (2-3 more seasons), but if they gave him a NTC on top of that they couldn't even buy their way out from under him by including their top prospect at that point. We're talking about a Pujols-type situation.

Honest question: would you take Hosmer back in a deal if you got one of their top 3 prospects back? Now ask yourself how much more they'd have to give you if you had to pay Freeman an extra $40 million (and possibly more to get him to waive that NTC)?

Freeman has always been substantially better than Hosmer. GMs don't make these deals with plans to sell them off in 2-3 years.

Freeman is an MVP currently in the midst of a season much like his seasons of past. As much as everyone likes to bring up the Goldy contract, that was an extension. He stood to make a good bit more on the open market had he maintained that production (i.e. like Freddie is currently doing).

WOAH. Passan: SS/CF Austin Martin and RHP Simeon Woods-Richardson are headed back to the Twins for Jose Berrios, sources tell ESPN. Wow. That is a massive haul for a year and a half of Berrios.

Blue Rays can retain Berrios, but yes that package for Minnesota is a nice return for a pitcher who is pointless on their team.

Again, one of those prospects was the main piece that they got in the Stroman trade. So they traded for capital, then traded that capital a year or so later to help the team moving forward. Not hoard prospects

Bryant/Kimbrel to Rays would be immensely preferable than seeing them go to the Mets or Phillies but I don’t want to hear anything else about how our payroll limits us from taking on those guys.

Kenta Maeda also a possibility.

The Twins pulled off the biggest deal of Deadline day thus far by sending Berríos to the Blue Jays for two Top-100 prospects, but sources say they're not done. Plenty more to trade, including Michael Pineda, Hansel Robles, Tyler Duffey and possibly Max Kepler or Byron Buxton.
