GDT: Brewers @ Braves 7/31

Is lugbauer a real prospect? He's gotta .891 ops at Mississippi at age 24

I don't think he really has a true position does he? And considering he's never really hit for a good average, even in college, I'm gonna guess the .266 average isn't real either.

Maybe he's beat the odds and put it together late. I'd wager not.

11% walk rate
24% strikeout rate

Getting very close to a special sweet spot for Riley and his power profile.

Today is a perfect day to go defense with heredia over joc vs a lhp.

Where can you find RPM data?

Baseball Savant seems to just have spin efficiency figures.

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/gamefeed?date=7/31/2021&gamePk=633117&chartType=pitch&legendType=pitchName&playerType=pitcher&inning=&count=&pitchHand=&batSide=&descFilter=&ptFilter=&resultFilter=&hf=playerBreakdown#633117

You have to the game box score for a particular game and then do player breakdown. And it will list spin for each pitch. the min, max, and average of each one plus what the yearly average is.

So for R Rod last night his average RPM on the fastball was 2252 compared to 2522 yearly average. He also only maxed out at 2338 last night. There have been games where's reached into the 2700's. IMO he's a perfect example of someone that was using and the effect it can have.

Lugbauer's K-rate is just too high even in an era when strikeouts aren't viewed as detrimentally as they were once viewed. I was a bit surprised to see him in AA seeing he hasn't really performed that well since his time in Danville/Rome during his initial season (and he struck out a ton there).

He was drafted as a catcher, but has moved off the position. If he could catch, it would enhance his chances. Like I wrote earlier in the week, it wasn't rare to see guys like Lugbauer on major league rosters in the 1960s when teams often carried three catchers with the third being a guy with some versatility who could serve as a pinch-hitter. That practice is a fading dot in the rear view mirror. I don't think the door is shut on him, but K-rates don't tend to get better. He clearly hits for power.

I'm anxious to see the production Soler will do under the tutelage of Chipper and Seitzer. What they have done with Riley is pretty damn amazing.

Will be interesting to see how Soler in front of Freddie plays out. Hopefully Morton get a hit or two since Smith is an automatic out.
