GDT 8/18/21: Braves @ Fish - A Shakeup

but the savings between a AAAA guy and tomlin is 500K, nothing. And the AAAA guys require roster churn, options, etc.

Money is spent regardless. We have used options on Wright/Newk/Webb/muller. Anyone of those guys are way better options and already on 40 man. Webb might be hurt maybe.

It's beneficial to the Braves that the Phillies player development appears to be terrible. When was the last time they developed a home grown hitting star? Chase Utley? Remember Domonic Brown? Then Scott Kingery? Then Mickey Moniak. Still early but Bohm isn't looking good either.

Meanwhile Braves have had tons of great success in that department, and you have guys like Harris, Waters, and TBD on Pache still coming up.

Those guys you theatrically still care about service time and development.

I'd agree with you 100% if Tomlin was piggy backed with Smyly.

But Tomlin only pitches if we are up by a million or down by a million and we need to cover 3-4 innings. Maybe we spend more money using 4 guys.

I'd rather have multiple multi-inning RPs we can use in a variety of options than a ****ty rag arm like Tomlin. But AA won't construct the team that way and Snit won't manage that way.

playoffs you only need 3, maybe 4 starters, right? They keep changing the formats...

Mortin, Fried, Anderson are the locks. If you had to have a 4th I would hope its a 1-2 time through the order combo of Ynoa/Smyly/Touki/Muller. Good mix of LH and RH. You can boot tomlin off the playoff roster.

Not talking playoffs until i see what happens in this next stretch of games vs Dodgers/Giants x2/Yanks, and even at Rockies is gonna be tricky, they're absurdly good at Coors. Still play at SD plus have to finish up a game we're losing by 1 vs them as well even though they're reeling, still a good club though.

Again we have fortyish games left. Not a huge lead with a tough schedule. We need to have every roster spot have potential to do their job. Tomlin served his purpose and needs to be gone

The "savings" could also include keeping him from blowing a game or two where you have a big lead between now and the end of the season. In a tight playoff race, what's that worth? I'm not saying he HAS TO be cut loose or made a Coach - although I'd like to see that happen personally - but if he's going to be kept on the roster, he simply has to be used more regularly because you're better off using a position player to pitch in laughers if you're not going to keep him sharp. He's now been used 7 times (11 IP) since the All-Star break, and he's given up 20 hits and 12 ER over that period. Culberson was better than that.

Smith is a much tougher decision. Even though he's struggling, he's not blowing games very often. We dealt with Melancon causing us to hold our breath seemingly every night, so how is this different? I'd be completely for a change if you had someone else that was currently pitching lights-out, but the only guy in the pen doing that right now is Matzek and you have no idea how he will respond if you ask him to take over the 9th inning since he's never done it before. If you're going to make a change with the guys currently on the roster, you have to go to Rodriguez - then the question becomes who is Snitker going to use as his precious "Swiss Army Knife" guy???

Tomlin is not good. He's not usually that bad.

I would postulate that Muller or Newk could also give up big numbers if they just lose the zone.

To be clear, I would argue that at roster expansion and playoffs he has no role. But I think they will have a long man next year to do the same thing.

Agree that next year you find a Roark type to fill that role. You don’t waste a prospect being a mop up guy. Just need to do something to make it a few more weeks. Tomlin just can get outs anymore.

Also. This isn’t just a bad game thing. Dude has had multiple games recently where he gave up 5+ runs. Like after all star break recent.

I mostly agree with this but they aren't going to use a prospect for that role until minors finish, imo.

Roark to me would be an option but they maybe consider him emergency starter depth and want to keep him somewhat ready for that.

With Anderson close to being back it might give them that latitude.

Tomlin last 7 games:
11.0 ip 9.82 era 1.82 whip

Tomlin last 15 games:
20.2 ip 8.71 era 1.65 whip

Dude is terrible. He almost cost us a practically unloseable game. It's time

Has Morton discussed a career past this year?

Think it would be amazing if he stayed 1 year at a time.
