Enscheff will have clear evidence why this is not something we should entertain, and undoubtedly he's right. Pitchers are fragile, they start their decline immediately after they make it to the bigs, pitchers on the wrong side of 30 are a terrible bet.
I'd do it anyway.

He was injured. Since coming off the IL in June, he's been dominant.

Let’s not get too carried away with Fried. This was the Orioles. A bottle dwelling team offensively. Great job by Max but let’s not crown him god just yet.

He's still been very good since coming off the IL, so it's not exactly a single-game SS.
Max Fried has TWO walks and 23 strikeouts in 27 IP in August with no homers and only two ER. He has more strikeouts than hits allowed (20). Most importantly, his WHIP is a meniscal 0.81.
There are folks around here who simply dedicate themselves to trying to rain on everyone's parade - regardless of what they're celebrating.
Fried's not a Hall Of Famer - yet - but if someone's excited about the way he pitched last night (or the way he's pitched lately) and wants to crow about it, KNOCK YOURSELF OUT.
They don't need to make room in Cooperstown for Max for you to enjoy what you're watching because you absolutely should enjoy it - it's called being a fan.

Well, it’s gets old reading the predictable overhyping of every single player every single time they go on a good run, and then reading the predictable whining every single time they struggle. Predictably, everyone wants to extend Fried after his best start of the year. As if they are now convinced he is good after this excellent start, and we’re unsure until this very moment. Then the schizophrenia will kick in whenever he has a bad month, and everyone will melt down about the contract.
The facts about Fried have not changed. He is still an excellent pitcher controlled through his age 30 season. Pitchers still decline almost without fail in their early 30s.
Extending Fried into his 30s because he is good in his 20s is a poor gamble, unless he gives up FA options in exchange for guaranteeing arb years.

No question. The problem is that's not the response typically given around here when someone mentions extending someone. I realize the discussion usually comes up when someone has a couple good starts or a hot stretch with the bat, but that's to be expected - barking at fans that do that is a little ridiculous, and that's what always happens around here. Hudson asked "Extend Fried?" - he didn't throw out any numbers and certainly didn't infer that the Braves should back up a Brinks truck, yet the response was "let's not crown him God just yet".
There's no reason for that. The correct response would be exactly as you laid it out - if he's willing to give up a free-agent year or two for for some security BOTH sides stand to benefit from that. There's no need to jump down Hudson's throat as if he recommended AA offer him a Scherzer-like deal when he did nothing of the sort. The approach to a potential Freeman or Dansby extension should be exactly the same - if they're willing to agree to something significantly more "team-friendly" than market value, the Braves would be crazy not to take on a little more injury/declining production risk (especially given the number of pieces the team has under control and how close this group is to potentially winning a title).
Folks around here are just a little too quick to want to call someone else "stupid" and pound their chests rather than actually carry on a conversation. Everything's not as black-and-white as people try to make it - give someone time to expand on their thought and ask them "what kind of extension are you talking about?". If their reply is "I'd lock him up for 6 or 7 years and $175-$200 million right now", THEN call them stupid - not before they say that.
