I’m no cheerleader of the Taliban, but a couple points:

1) What exactly should be the US Government’s official stance on the Taliban regime? We spent 20 years trying to force a regime change and it crumbled in a matter of days. It’s pretty clear then that the Taliban will be a government entity that we have to deal with. The only two options are to handle our conflicting world views via diplomacy or force, and force didn’t exactly work. Some extremely limited lip service to their government’s competence isn’t necessarily wrong. Hell, the previous Administration met with them and brokered deals with them.

2) Clearly public executions and amputations are awful. I’d argue we aren’t the country able to throw stones at that particular glass house, though.

I disagree. Unless the target is regime change again, I think working with the new government is the only real option, just as we do with other similar nations. We don’t talk about the other ones in press briefings much, since they aren’t popular news stories, but I’m sure I can pull quotes about nearly all bad governments that have similar sentiments.
