Around the League - 2021 Szn

Braves world series seems to have accelerated the PC Police so hope we win, Atlanta Braves might not exist for much longer.

I think we've escaped for one more cycle. And "Braves" isn't a racial slur. "Redskins" was.

I like the way they try and be inclusive with the Cherokee. And as tone deaf as Manfred can be, he's right, it's a local issue. If the Cherokee had a problem with it, then that would matter. I hear they're not big on the chop, though. Maybe we should look at that.

Chief Jim Billie was the leader of the Seminole Nation for many years, had the balls to challenge sovereignty laws in federal courts (and won), started an empire with bingo that is now one of the biggest hotel/casino operations in the world.

I remember one of these controversies, maybe 20 years ago, and ABC is interviewing him before the FSU game, trying to goad him into saying the nickname and the chop are disrespectful...he's growing impatient. Says, "Hey, are we done here? I have seats on the 50."

Chief Phillip Martin of Choctaw Indians was asked by our state paper about the name "braves". He said he wasn't offended by the name... he was offended they were losing so bad using that name lol

Love it.

I guess I'm a bad liberal, not nearly as amped about PC **** as others. Celebrate differences, enjoy each others' diversity, but enough with being pissed off about every damn thing. Life's too short.

Wow. This is a really crazy development. Really a much better hire for them than I thought they'd get.

The more important note is that allowing him to go could be an issue of cash flow for the A’s….so do they have a fire sale this off-season? That’s what was being talked about last night.

This country has a hell of a lot of real problems right now. Which is why quibbling on the name bullpen is such an egregious waste of time and effort.

The easiest way to avoid the discussion about something of actual importance like income inequality is to make the peasants fight over something trivial, and frame it as a cultural war bigger than financial concerns. The GOP has perfected it, and the Libs are too busy whining to realize it’s happening.

“They” know exactly how to accomplish that.

ESPN thinks everything is racist

The average Georgian is either going to tell you they are an Indian way back or that the Indians really did have brass bands and pull for Florida State football so it's basically a museum piece.

While i certainly would understand not appreciating being made into a cartoon version of a western or something if I was a Native American, I don't think there is actually any nasty intent to the thing.

I guess that matters.

I predate the chop and hate something so derivative and annoying was introduced to begin with...so I do t mind if it goes away. It doesn't really annoy me now though.

I pull for a football school whose sacred traditions include an Elvis introduction rip off and techno music so what room do I have to talk about silly.

Jeff Passan gem article on how the chop is racist and will be on full display by a "majority-white" crowd in Atlanta.

I sympathize with what happened to Native American people, it was wrong, history is full of that **** to almost everyone at one point or another. All that said, none of the Braves stuff hurts them in the slightest bit. Native Americans in pop culture is the only reason people remember Native Americans.

As someone who grew up on a farm, I can assure PETA that very few bulls are slaughtered. Bulls are used for breeding. Steers--the testicle-less version of the male cow--are what generally head to the slaughterhouse.

Even as a lifelong lib, PETA is a joke. In college, my buddy told me PETA was against cows being milked, even if they were treated humanely and lived wonderfully organic comfortable lives. I couldn't believe it. Seemed perfectly "ethical" to me. So we called the PETA hotline, and whatever poor soul was manning that phone confirmed that as a philosophical premise, even if it was a really happy cow, milking it was a moral violation. So dumb.

Update on Coppy and the old GM of the Astros. I didn't know that Coppy went to work for John Harts company after his ban. He has since become unemployed as the company was sold.

“Coppy was a visionary, and his vision was for this team to be in the World Series in 2021,’’ said former Atlanta scouting director Brian Bridges, now a scout with the San Francisco Giants. “You look at that team, and what they’re doing now, and he’s pretty much responsible except for their trades this summer.

Well I disagree with that

WTF? Seriously, WTF? There are layers to how ****ed up this is, and it is this kind of thing that just makes me wish the Braves would change their name, drop the tomahawk, and move on from the chop. Native Americans still exist. Still exist on reservations. Still aren't like the twisted pulp culture stereotype that teams like the Indians, Braves, Chiefs, and Redskins profited from. This is why stuff like the Braves issue DOES hurt. And, if you haven't been paying attention, several Native American organizations representing thousands of Natives have come forward in opposition of the name, of the chop, and of the tomahawk. It is beyond time to move the **** on from this ****.

Should tribes include their name on casinos? Will the next generations see Native Americans as just gamblers. How does being associated with gaming uplift people other than monetarily?

Everything in life can be considered offensive if you look hard enough.

I would say that celebrating a home run with a chop doesn’t do any more harm to a community than creating a narrative that a community only survives off gambling.

I think Brian Bridges is a little bitter about being fired by the Braves.
The writer left off the part that all the players Coppy cheated to sign aren’t good at baseball.

Coppy is talented enough to be in baseball, maybe even as a GM.

AA is in a different class as a decision maker. I feel sorry for Coppy (especially after reading about how hard he’s taken it), but the international scandal was the best thing that’s happened to this franchise in a long time.
