Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

The reason I would be shocked by a verlander addition is because I estimate the Braves have $50M-$60M to spend. Assuming Freeman takes up nearly $30M of that, I don’t see how Verlander at $20M also fits.

If the Braves can afford all that, I would be shocked. In a good way.

Would you rather have Freeman at 30M or Verlander and Rizzo for 35M?

For next year? I would take Freeman. The risk variance is very low for him.

If Freddie is for 6 years and Verlander and Rizzo are for 2 years, then I think I prefer the latter.

I'm curious as to what the final payroll was for 2021. AA did say that it started below the 2020 payroll which had been our highest, but rose with the deadline additions.

He mentioned that payroll will for sure be going up for 2022. As we have seen, he typically leaves around $10m or so for deadline acquisitions .

It's more nuanced than that.

Would I rather have Verlander for 2/40 plus Rizzo for 3/45 vs Freeman for 6/180 (FG projections)? Almost certainly.

Would I prefer that to Freeman for 3/90? Probably not.

Would I prefer Verlander for a single season at $20M if that meant no additions to the OF? Definitely not.

Well obviously I was going with the Fangraphs/MLBTR projections lol

2021 was 174 million.
2019 was 184 million.

Free agent Freddie Freeman was on the mind of
every team seeking a first baseman, with Freeman
rejecting Atlanta’s five-year, $135 million offer, and
seeking closer to a six-year, $200 million deal. Yet,
you couldn’t find a soul who believes Freeman won’t
be returning to Atlanta.

This is again Bob Nightengale, famous liar and/or idiot. It's 50/50 whether this is based on something he actual heard or if it's just something he imagined. I'll note that the terms of the offer slightly changed from what he reported yesterday.

Never forget:

The Braves were always going to overpay for Freddie but I'm not touching $200M with a 10-foot pole - age-32 first baseman who's already had elbow surgery and eye issues. Nah.

That said, I bet Atlanta ends up signing him for around $180M and we all get frustrated by the amount.
