Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

If you would have told me in 2019 that this bum was going to get a 5/110 I would have laughed you off this board.

That’s because you were one of the idiots who didn’t understand how good Gausman actually was despite being shown the numbers several times.

Re sign Freeman
Trade for one of Reynolds or Mullins
Bring in a legit RH bullpen arm
Bring back Rosario and maybe Soler depending on Ozuna

We win the East again regardless of what else the Mets do.

I suspect the plan will be, in this order…

Acquire Freeman, Rizzo or Olson
Sign the best cOF available for 1-2 years
Bring back Duvall to fake it in CF until Pache is ready
Sign the best healthy SP available for 1 year
Sign an Ozuna replacement once the suspension is final
Maybe grab a bargain BP arm

Then at the deadline, reassess the OF and BP once they see what happens with Pache and all the arms. If AA can somehow fleece the Pirates or Os for Reynolds or Mullins, that obviously changes things a bit, and Duvall may not be back.

The lockout isnt until Wednesday/Thursday night, not sure what Monday has to do with anything either.

Re-read the earlier post. None of these deals are "official" until the player has passed a physical. If Freeman's in California, he'd have to catch a cross-country flight (which would take a day) then have the physical and related MRIs and other tests - that will take another 24-36 hours.

While this is a bit more of a time-crunch for Pitchers, it's not "manufactured drama" as a certain self-professed expert wants to think it is. Players who are concerned about how the upcoming CBA negotiations are going to turn out - and how long they're liable to take - are making decisions now. You don't have to look any further than Scherzer to see this - he's likely going to sign today rather than try to milk the market for an extra year or few million dollars, yet out of the other side of his mouth he says he won't sign off on agreeing with the owners unless "this CBA completely addresses the competition (issues) and younger players getting paid". Once he's taken care of his money, he seems more than prepared to deal with a long lockout.

This is exactly why we've seen so much activity early this winter - and will see a bunch more signings today.

I think the Mets will likely be better this year given the uncertainty with Acuna, Morton, and Soroka. However, the Braves can be patient and look for value and commit to players and trades that are good value. This is how modern teams assemble good teams. Cohen claims he wants to build Dodgers East, but he basically does the thing that rich dumb teams do (it’s really hard to build a losing team on a 250+ million payroll).

The Mets are throwing everything in the cart to go all in on a pretty thin core. If DeGrom has health issues again next year, their ceiling is pretty well hard capped.

Not exactly - while they seem to be spending like money's going out of style, this isn't the Steinbrenner Yankees' MO.

None of the guys they've signed - or are linked to - were QO free-agents. They gave up nothing to sign Marte, Canha, or Escobar, and neither Scherzer, Stroman, or Rodon would cost them a pick. Gausman, Gray, or Matz wouldn't have either. They're rumored to still be talking to Baez and he's another unrestricted free-agent. The money's flowing like it used to when George was in charge across town back in the day, but Cohen is made of it so that's not a big deal. They're going to make all these splashy signings and still have two Top-14 picks in the draft.

They're still the Mutts, so there's always hope that they'll find new ways of screwing things up - but other than costing them a little extra money that they can easily afford these aren't bad signings if they draft well and can replace a couple of these guys 3 years from now. Alvarez, Baty, Mauricio, and Vientos are all Top 100 prospects, they have some depth, and Allan and Ginn are pretty solid arms that aren't that far away. Nick Plummer was a pretty nice sneaky signing for them as well.

Corey Seager expected to sign today as well. Rangers still in the mix for him, would put Semien at 2B if that happened. Today might be pretty crazy in terms of signings.

Well I guess a ton of us got it wrong except you. Like two franchises full of MFers who do this for a living and not a fake ass MLB exec like your sorry ass thinks you are.

Oh tell us Kevin Towers…what’s our next move??

Morosi: Sources: Multiple #MLB teams have had recent trade discussions with #Reds about their starting pitchers. Tyler Mahle and Sonny Gray are available. Luis Castillo is, too, but has a very high price tag. @MLBNetwork

Yeah i kinda see why players are signing closer to Monday now. Some are still gonna wait. Regards to Freeman, nothing would really surprise me on that front with him and the Braves. Havent seen anything that says they're anywhere closer to a deal than they were before.

I sorta expect them to bring in another guy on a Smyly-type deal as well, but do at least wonder if Alex might be willing to start the season with Ynoa/Wright/Muller/Davidson pitching in the bulk role with an Opener in the #4/#5 spots and signing someone like Boyd on a 1 year plus an option type of deal for $10-$11 million total that could turn out to be a bargain and wait to plug him (and potentially Soroka) in after the break. Say you split that into $3 million for 2022 while he's rehabbing with a team option for 2023 at $8 million.

That would put your veteran on a 1 year deal in place for 2023 already. In the event Soroka somehow returns to health (not so likely) or Wright or Strider - or even one of the other young guys - takes a big step forward and Morton finally decides it's time to ride off into the sunset, you would have his money to pay a SS or re-sign Dansby to a favorable 3-4 year deal.

I saw where Castellanos wants a 7-8 year deal lol. That’ll never happen. Ever. Sonny Gray does intrigue me though.

I mean, he just turned 30 and Semien got 7 years. It's not a crazy ask, very unlikely to happen though especially with a QO attached.

This seems very reasonable. Maybe with a trade to fill a need.

I do not want Olson. I think it would be a mistake to send top tier prospect capital for a 1B. I think you could just put Soler at 1B. I know FF does some good things for us defensively, but I'm saving prospect capital for basically any position other than 1B.

The prices this year are interesting. I'm not a pocket watcher. There is no cap. So in general I'm all for the guys getting all the money they can. Liberty can spend double the money and still make a profit based on their publicly reported numbers. We just know that Liberty will cap us somewhere. If Cohen has no cap and wants to pay 20 million extra for 1 WAR over Morton then who cares if you're a Mets fan?

Marlins are wanting another outfielder and they list Rosario, Schwarber, Taylor, and Castellanos as targets. Marlins could have a sneaky good team.

The question is "Do we really have top tier prospects"?

They're in on Stallings as well, apparently. One of those bats + Stallings would be big for them with Garcia coming on yesterday.

The division should be very competitive next year. Hopefully they can get Freddie signed soon bc we can’t trade prospects for an OF’er without knowing if we are gonna need them to trade for a 1b. So that’s kinda holding things up.
