Spring Training Gamethread/Discussion

Niners didn't say we sucked. He just doesn't buy that we were "scary good". In honesty, we weren't scary good. We had a couple of short bursts of excellent baseball surrounded by mediocrity. Now, if we rebound at 2nd base and CF, we certainly could be a 'scary good' team and see an incredible fight to the finish with Washington. And for the record, I think the Nats will rebound and have a terrific season.

The Braves had a span last year where they went 25-7 which included a 14 game winning streak. Then there was the 14-1 start. That's two incredible stretches of play. Posting a 39-8 record in a 47 game stretch (almost a 1/3 of the season even if those stretches were split up) is nothing to sneeze at. That just shows how incredible and scary good the Braves can be when things are going well.

But seriously, if you're going to hold that against the Braves and say that they were a mediocre team aside from those 2 stretches of play then you've got to say that about every team that was in the playoffs. Because the truth is, aside from a couple of great stretches of play every team is a mediocre team. No team goes the whole season winning just 2 out of every 3 games without no stretches of winning 12 of 16 or bad stretches of losing 8 of 12. I counted it up once and if I remember correctly, I ended up with 108 wins by doing that and 108 wins very rarely happens. Most playoff teams end up with 90-95 wins. So that means there has to be some bad stretches of play in there somewhere followed by some great stretches of play to erase the bad stretches of play and the rest of the time the team is just a .500 baseball team. It's the way baseball works when you play that many games.

You want me to prove what I just said? Let's look at those 2012 Nationals that everyone seems to be scared to death of.

14-4 start to the season. They followed that up by going 18-19. Next came a 21-16 stretch of play. So that's an extended stretch of play where they went 39-35. That doesn't exactly scream domination and scary good. Next came another incredible hot streak of 24-7. That was followed up by losing 5 straight. That was followed by another mini-burst of great play where they went 12-3. They ended the regular season by going on a 9-10 streak. In those 3 streaks the Nationals went 50-14 (over a 64-game span, almost exactly 1/3 of the season). That means the other 2/3's of the season they went just 48-50. So the 2012 Nationals aside from 3 stretches of great play were a mediocre team. See how that works?

Looks like my haters are coming out earlier this season.

I've never said this team sucks. I have always been less confident than most everyone else, but that is just who I am when it involves my teams. I hate getting all excited about a team's chances to win it all because the odds aren't in your favor. By the end of the season you are going to be disappointed. The Braves are a good team, but good doesn't win a world series. I am predicting a wild card game for the Braves. Winning that game or not depends on the opponent. Regardless as of today I don't expect the Braves to win a playoff series again this season. You guys can pile on and question my fan hood like normal. Or just respect my prediction knowing full well I am no less a fan than anyone else.

Im with you niners. I probably watch in excess of 120 games yearly, yesterday I paid for my 40 ticket package, just like every yea. Some of us are slower to get past the card collection, I WISH I WAS (HIM), hero worship, et al. I too think the Nats will be hard to beat this year in spite of last year. Why? Young pitching staff, I cant ignore Davey Johnsons reputation, their pitching, our Uggla and BJ.

Our only hope is that someday some of these guys get jobs or go back to school. Im long retired but still dont have 22 hours every day to extoll my infatuation with a baseball team.

Exactly, and bravo...every team win's a third of their games, and loses a third...no one is scary good all year...no one goes all year winning 3 outta every 5...every team in the playoffs had their good and bad stretches.

Matt Williams is now the manager, but that might be a positive, considering how Davey flirted with dementia last year.

Look at the rotation for the Giants starting to click already. We are going to miss Hudson. He's going to have a huge year (on and off the field).

So is ours yet you and others complain 24/7 :Alone:

They aren't starting to click in the way I am talking about (our starters have allowed 5x the amount of runs) and one of them hasn't thrown a pitch and the other is losing three or four MPH in a couple innings. ****ing hell. YOU are the one who complains constantly.

I know about Williams. I was referring to Johnsons reputation of being too old school to interact with todays young superstars.

His raw numbers should be better considering where he is playing. But I doubt he has a huge year.

Garcia 5 innings - 0 ER
Julio 5 innings - 0 ER
Medlen 5 innings - 1 ER
Wood - 2 innings - 0 ER
Beachy - 5 innings - 2 ER

Comes out to a 1.27 ERA for our 5 current projected starters over 22 innings. Yes Minor will take one of their places eventually, likely Wood.

Yes the Giants projected rotation has given up 1 ER over 20 innings. Although I don't know why Vogelsong has yet to start a game but still has 5 innings. Petit, who is likely battling Vogelsong for the 5th spot has given up 7 runs in 2 1/3 innings. But yeah, their rotations is way out performing ours.

I am combining on and off the field. I think the young Giants rotation will benefit greatly from having him around.

I never even mentioned our rotation until Heyward turned my comment to a negative one about the team. They are clicking on and off the field. Several articles about it. People are talking. It was never meant as a negative toward our rotation.

Yeah but you did quote that our starters have given up 5X the runs that theirs have which isn't even true. I don't care who is talking about them clicking or where they are clicking at. Our rotation is excellent and it had no room in it for Hudson for two years.

No room for Hudson? :happy0157:
