Andruw Jones

I was reading the below Fangraphs article and it appears Andruw Jones has a real shot at the hall of fame before his time is up. He certainly is deserving of consideration. But that brings me back to something I've always thought was ridiculous, how Atlanta has not retired his #25. I don't need to run through the accolades, but it will be embarrassing if he gets voted into the hall and doesn't have his number retired in Atlanta.

I was happy to read that a few weeks ago.

Really gives him a great shot, especially as some is those guys roll off.

He deserves it.

NYC's original point still resonates though...

Not only is it embarrassing that the organization hasn't retired his number, there's probably some truth in those NOT voting for him making the point that - "ell, they don't even believe he's deserving in Atlanta since they retired Murphy's number and not his".

It comes to mind every year and I still can't fathom it. It's not like the Braves have shunned him since he left. He's in the Braves Hall of Fame, and he is often invited back for alumni events and other celebrations. There was that scandal he was caught in many years ago, but I doubt that's holding anything up.

The most recent issue is that Tyler Flowers was wearing #25 lol

Dale Murphy was a vastly more influential and popular Brave and I'm fairly confident no HOF voter gives a **** which numbers the Braves have retired.

One of my fanboy conspiracy theories is that Andruw hasn't gotten more Hall of Fame consideration (though he does seem to be on a positive trajectory) because of his late career weight gain. If he had the exact same career, but ended it a svelte 180 pounds, I think he gets more support.

If he ended his career at 180 lbs his career would have been much better.

It shouldn't be, considering they've retired Cox's and Chipper's numbers already.

Well the weight gain contributed to him falling off a cliff. But yes, if his career just ended at age 30 like Sandy Koufax then he would have gotten a lot more support than he's received so far.

From 97-06 he was 3rd in fWAR for position players at 60.9 behind only ARod and Bonds. Considering what those two were up to there is an argument that Andruw was the best player in that time period.

Whats the offensive mantle have to be for the greatest CF of all time? Surely Druw hit that qualification.

What domestic abuse scandal was Chipper involved in?

I just referenced “scandal”; I never appended DV.

And while Hooters-premised infidelity seems a lot less serious to me than DV, it certainly scandalized plenty of people at the time.
