School Choice - It's Time

They never actually stopped slavery and stealing from people. They just disguised it. We lead the world in incarceration rate. More black people in chains now than during any point before the civil war. Heck, where I am from they dont even need a unanimous jury to enslave you. That way they can have two token negros on the jury and still convict.

Surely you must see that in most cases that isn’t what’s taught. There are people that take things too far, but they’re not the majority. What is more frequently taught is that America has a shameful history regarding race and that there are aspects of our daily lives that have been influenced by this history.

Yeah - Kids would have learned that election laws can only be changed by the state legislator and we'd have a competent person in the white house.

RALEIGH — A new poll from a statewide school-choice advocacy group shows that nearly two-thirds of likely general election voters in North Carolina support the Opportunity Scholarship Program.


Sixty-two percent of respondents favor the scholarship, compared to 28% who oppose it. The poll, commissioned by Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina, found an enthusiasm gap, as well, with 36% of those in favor of Opportunity Scholarships expressing that support “strongly,” compared to 18% of those opposed to the program doing so “strongly.”

Opportunity Scholarships are valued at up to $4,200 a year and help low- and moderate-income families send their children to a private school. Due to a significant expansion included in the new budget, the scholarships will now be worth up to $5,900 each annually. They also will be expanded to new families due to an increased income threshold needed to qualify.

The PEFNC poll found that a majority of parents would prefer to send their child to a non-traditional public school if cost and geography weren’t factors. Fifty-two percent would choose a school choice option like a private school, charter school, or home school, compared to 38% who would choose a traditional public.

“What we are finding is that the past two years have been a breakout moment for the school choice movement in our state,” said Long. “Even while more and more parents are clamoring for options, the real and substantial progress we are seeing continues to be fought tooth and nail by the education establishment, which wants parents to only have one option — their locally zoned public school. Here is what parents and voters are telling us: That type of thinking does not reflect the varied options and demands of our 21st-century life. School choice is here to stay.”

As New Yorkers know better than anyone, everything costs more here. But seven times more? Alas, yes — at least if you’re talking about public-construction projects. The latest example: PS 33 in The Bronx, vs. a similar-sized school just across the Hudson in Jersey City, NJ.

It’s outrageous. And it goes a long way toward explaining why New York hits residents and businesses here with the highest taxes in America.

As The Post’s Conor Skelding and Ben Blanchet report, the two new facilities are similar in almost every aspect — except price. In Jersey City, a new 53,000-square-foot charter school will offer 480 seats at a cost of $12.5 million. In The Bronx, an expansion of PS 33 will add 46,000 square feet and just 388 seats but cost a whopping $70 million. That’s $180,000 per seat in New York, compared with just $26,000 across the river, or 6.9 times more.

Charter school champion Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday announced a “historic” $750 million initiative to entrench and expand the sector across 20 metro areas, including New York City, over the next five years.

Bloomberg Philanthropies, the former three-term city mayor’s charitable arm, will “support the success and growth of existing charter and autonomous schools, open new high-quality charter schools, and create city- and state-level conditions that will help sustain this progress,” according to a release.

Calling American public education “broken,” Bloomberg contended that charter schools serve as educational oases amid an otherwise bleak schooling landscape.

“The pandemic hasn’t just underscored that reality — it has made it worse, and the remedy isn’t more tinkering around the edges,” Bloomberg said in a statement. “The future of our country depends on bold changes to education.”

The organization cited grim academic metrics — especially for low-income minority kids — that have decayed still further in the wake of COVID-19.

“For example, more than half of third graders in predominantly Black and Latino schools tested at least two grade levels behind in math and reading than pre-pandemic,” the release stated.

The organization argued that charter schools were better able to respond to pandemic challenges because of their independence.

Montana Department of Revenue (2020), the U.S. Supreme Court said that if a state provides educational subsidies that help parents send their children to private schools, then the state "cannot disqualify some private schools solely because they are religious." It was a big win for both school choice and religious liberty advocates.

Those advocates may now be on the cusp of another victory. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Wednesday in Carson v. Makin, a case which asks whether Maine's tuition assistance program ran afoul of the Constitution by excluding private schools that offer "sectarian" education.

Religious schools "satisfy every secular requirement to participate in the tuition assistance program. It is only because of religion that they are excluded," said Michael Bindas, the lawyer for the family challenging the policy. "You can call that discrimination based on religious use. You can call it discrimination based on religious status. Either way, it is discrimination based on religion, and either way, it is unconstitutional."

I'm looking at the cases before the court this term likely to solidify gun rights, enable school vouchers, and incrementally roll back Roe to the states...yep, it sure was.

For me its that the uncovering of the 'veil of media honesty' is what will prove to have the most significance moving forward.

But the court system sure is looking like a saving grace right now.

His second term will be even better Jaw.

I measure progress as more kids leaving school with proficiency in reading, writing, math, and other core skills.

Right now we’re paying for kids to get secular religious educations without the proficiency in basic skills.

As long as the schools do not discriminate against non-Christians, I don’t see the harm in this. The fact is that many students attend these schools, and I take no issue with providing funding to help them teach the students.
