Global Events & Politics Überthread

Hopefully these Russian boys will lay down their arms. Putin's war is not worth giving their lives for. Prayers for their souls, their mothers and fathers, and the rest of the Russian people.

They have been surrendering in significant numbers. That is always an option. Refuse to fight on behalf of a tyrant's war. Some causes are worth dying for. In this case, the cause is worth surrendering for.

I’ve seen pockets but what would make you think this is happening in significant numbers? Do you have a total? A percentage?

People will be reading in textbooks in fifty years that this was facilitated because of the push for green energy in the west before it was logistically feasible.

Reasonable people would ask why are we being lied to during such a pivotal time of the 21st century?

I agree with Rubio that Putin has become even more hyper-aggrieved and paranoid. He is off the charts in that department now. But he will remain hyper-aggrieved no matter what the outcome in Ukraine. It is something baked deep into his little boy's psyche.

But Putin is but a single man. Albeit a dangerous and malevolent one. He is nothing without all the enablers around him. We may not be able to influence his mental process but surely we can make his enablers see there is an enormous price they will have to pay. So resistance to Putin's war comes in two parts. One from incentivizing his enablers and other Russians to abandon him. Sadly this will involve many Russian boys dying for his folly. Second of course is providing the Ukrainians will the military aid, training, intelligence and other assistance to extract as high a price as possible from Putin's invading army.

Sure. Why not start WWIII. This will end well.

We can make the Russians enabling Putin (which sadly includes many Russian boys in the Army) pay a very high price without starting WWIII. I would not be in favor of NATO invading any other country or even enforcing a no fly zone over Ukraine. But give Ukraine as much help as possible to make the Russians pay the highest price possible for Putin's war.

It’s effectively the same thing. We are picking a side in a conflict that has yet to be resolved.

I wonder if those that pushed Russian collusion hoax understand how much that contributed to where we are now.

Putin's War

Not WWIII.

If it spills beyond Ukraine it will be because of the paranoia and sense of hyper-aggrievement baked into his little boy's brain. He's already nibbled at other countries. Moldova. Georgia. Surely, the rest of the world (including FINLAND and Sweden) are entitled to observe his behavior and draw the appropriate conclusions.

Putin's War

Not WWIII.

Pretend that history didn't start two weeks ago....

Putin can be a war criminal and deserve to die while also acknowledging the West had many miststeps that contributed to where we are.

'Putins war' will be WWIII if we continue to position ourselves the way we are. Ukraine has absolutely no interest to the United States. If Putin is dumb enough to invade a NATO ally then all bets are off and he should meet the full force of the free people of the world.

Putin has stated repeatedly that his goal is reclaim the former Soviet states. Some of those states are NATO members. Discouraging that indirectly now in a non NATO country is much preferred to discouraging it directly in a NATO country later. The last time appeasement worked in Europe was when Mohammad's followers were invading.

There is a sleeping giant waiting for the West to get into a war with Russia.

No one said history started 2 weeks ago. The past is always present. We have a situation right now where one country is trying to violently subjugate another. The invading country happens to be led by a man filled with paranoia and a sense of hyper-aggrievement. His psyche is immutable with respect to anything we do. But other Russians that are enabling him are capable of calculating and being influenced by the costs Russians are going to be bearing for Putin's War.
